Book Review: Can't say enough good stuff Summary: 5 Stars
As a frustrated guitar player, I ended up with a mandolin. I bought this book because of the reviews here. It is clear. Concise and gives you a solid understanding of not only the instrument, but the way music works. Bravo Mr. Horne!
Book Review: I am enjoying this book and CD Summary: 4 Stars
I already have some music experience with the guitar. Someone gave me a mandolin so I decided to learn how to play it. I didn't want to spend the time or money with private lessons but desire to teach myself to play this small instrument. This Beginning Mandolin book and CD by Greg Horne fits the bill. I have been using it daily for several weeks and I seem to be progressing quite well. The book is very detailed and describes the basics of music reading as well as playing this particular instrument. The beginner can go as fast or as slow as necessary to learn the concepts. I would recommend it for beginning mandolin players with or without previous music experience.
Book Review: beginning mandolin book and CD Summary: 4 Stars
This is excellent guide for beginners, because one can hear the piece played and then attempt to play along. Great for timing.
However, it moves along quite rapidly without enough quality practice pieces to reinforce fingering, simple cords and music reading. The CD moves from one piece to the next without much hesitation and without introduction...often before I am quite ready. This requires stopping and starting the CD frequently.(am using a tascam) I practice a lot and use the first half constantly and definitely recommend it.
Book Review: Very good Summary: 4 Stars
As this book has both the standard music notation and the tablature, you can choose how to study, start right away with tablature which will have you playing tunes very soon and take up the standard notation later or begin with learning the standard (classical) notation.
The cd gives it extra value. Explains several techniques and styles (blues, bluegrass, rock).
Very good beginners course.
