Book Review: One that is worth the effort.

I have a feeling that a lot of my fellow guitarists share my experience with guitar instructional books. Do you, like me, have a big collection of them but have not worked the entire way through any? And always buying more?
I love working on guitar. I pour myself into it. I have a real fascination for theory perhaps because it comes somewhat easily to me. But coordination and speed are my big difficulties. So I practice alot.
I begin many guitar method books with excitement and commitment. I work on it diligently. But eventually interest gets pulled away to other things - new songs, new exercises, or just jammin to CDs - even other method books.
After several months of working on this book, I have found it to be by far the best lesson book I know of! I showed it to my teacher, and he loves it too. I remarked to him one week that it may take me a year to work through this book. He said, "That would be a year well spent!"
What I am learning covers the spectrum of issues important to the guitarist. From this book you gain a comprehensive way of thinking about and playing music. In this book are 38 etudes and songs each directly pertinent to the theory and exercises associated with it. Each not only demonstrates the theory and drills, but expresses the unique beauty in the subject at hand. I don't just play through the songs and move on. (Not in this book!) Some of these pieces are truly beautiful! I continue to practice the etudes and songs trying to perfect the execution of each piece. It's hard. It's enjoyable.
I bought the package that included the DVD. I'm very glad I did. Jody Fisher as host and teacher takes us through a series of excellent brief lessons that cover an impressive territory. The DVD also includes recorded tracks of all 38 etudes and songs in the book. On several tracks, extended time is given to the piece so you can work on improvisation. The audio tracks on the DVD are listed at the end of the menu, easy to overlook, but they are there.
So, I'll be busy with this book for quite a while. And there are 3 more books in this series! - I'm good until 2011!

P.S. I agree with another reviewer - The "Coda" section in the back of the book by itself is worth the price of the book.
