Book Reviews of Bed, Bed, Bed (They Might Be Giants)

Book Review: Absolutely Beautiful!
Summary: 4 Stars

I got this book as a gift for a 17-month-old girl, and it has been a huge success. I had second thoughts about giving it to her--I'm a They Might be Giants fan, adored the gorgeous illustrations, and kind of wanted to keep it for myself! The joy this book brings this girl is more than enough reward for my generosity, she absolutely adores it. I couldn't disagree more with reviewers who question this books appeal to young children. This girl asks for it by name constantly and I have read it to her countless times. She is transfixed by the illustrations and has learned a lot of words from the book. While the "stories" are song lyrics rather than straight text, I disagree with reviewers who see this as a weakness, the rhyme and rhythm of the words entrances the little girl I got it for. The text is very much in keeping with Dr. Seuss and other classic children's authors, in my opinion. I highly recommend this book!

Book Review: Love it to have, but not to read.
Summary: 4 Stars

I am an embarrassingly huge, long-time TMBG fan with a little kid who is a recent convert, so I bought a few copies of Bed, Bed, Bed in advance of release. I think Marcel Dzama's illustrations are gorgeous and the songs are fun, but now that I have looked at it once, I feel like it is more something to have than to read. The book is done extraordinarily well, so I am pleased to own it. I almost wish, though, that rather than going for elegance, TMBG had taken the route of the NO! disk and website and made the book zany, over-the-top fun (pop-ups, flaps, dials, push sounds...whatever). Even if that had made it a bit more expensive, I think it would have been truer to the Giants' experience and would have made it nightly reading at our house. I hope the guys go for it again in the future. I'll be first in line.

Book Review: Wonderful music and stories from TMBG
Summary: 4 Stars

I love the music on the cd and the intriguing art work in the accompanying book. My kids are big TMBG fans and I couldn't wait to get something new from the Johns. The songs are uplifting and again encourage kids to use their imagination and reach for their dreams. Idlewild is a beautiful lullaby that I enjoy hearing over and over myself. The only thing I did not enjoy as much was the different version of "Bed Bed Bed", but that may be because I like the original version so much. I would highly recommend this to any fans of TMBG with kids (or to the kids who are fans themselves).

Book Review: Good Good Good!
Summary: 4 Stars

My latest purchase is Bed, Bed, Bed, a children's book by one of my favorite bands, They Might Be Giants. It's a great book, with an accompanying four song CD of music designed to help children fall asleep. This project came to fruition after the amazing success of TMBG's children's CD NO! Check them out, you will not be disappointed, they offer so many free mp3s and they even have a clock radio for your computer which has three different stations of streaming TMBG music!

Book Review: Fun bedtime book
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a big TMBG fan. I thought this would be perfect for my 2 1/2 year-old daughter so I got it as a Christmas present this year. She loves it. So far we have read and listened to it every night since she got it. Nice job, John and John.
