Book Reviews of Because of Winn-DixieBook Review: Great read for 3rd-5th graders Summary: 5 Stars
This is the story of India Opal Buloni, a 10-year old girl who lives with her dad, a preacher. Her mom left when she was 3, and they have just moved to Naomi, Florida. It's the summer, and Opal hasn't made any friends yet and is feeling very lonely. When she meets a stray dog at a Winn-Dixie grocery store, her life begins to get more interesting. Naming the dog Winn-Dixie, Opal begins to come out of her shell and meet some of the local characters. Her world is brightened by an elderly librarian, a nearly-blind recluse, a "pinch-faced" girl, 5-year old Sweetie Pie, a former convict, and two bald-headed boys. This is a sweet little story about a girl learning about friendship and letting go of the past. There is a particularly heartwarming story when Gloria encourages Opal not to judge others by what they've done in the past, but by what they're doing in the present. It's a sweet story with an even sweeter message. I'm so glad Kate DiCamillo managed to write a heartwarming story about a dog who doesn't die at the end!
Book Review: READ THIS 5 Stars
Because of Winn-Dixie is about a girl that finds a dog in a grocery store she told the manager that the dog was her and told he manager that his name was Winn-Dixie. She went to ask her dad if she can keep the dog he said that they should ask the trailer park manager if they can keep the dog said, yes. One day she went to the pet shop. Winn-Dixie destroyed the store. Then she went to the library where she met the librarian. She tells her stories. Opol is the name of the girl. She met a lady. Some boys made fun of her and called her a witch. One day opal and the lady made a party they invited all their friends. During the party there was a storm but Winn-Dixie is scared of the storms. They started to put the stuff inside. By the time they remembered about Winn-Dixie, he was gone. They looked everywhere but no track of him. Will they find him? You'll have to read the book. My favorite part is when the librarian tells her a story about her and a bear. I recommend this book to ages 7 and up.
Book Review: Because of Winn-Dixie Summary: 5 Stars
"It's hard not to immediately fall in love with a dog who has a good sense of humor." Kate DiCamillo's adorable award winning novel centers around Opal and her new dog, Winn-Dixie. She has just moved to Naomi Florida, with her father, "the preacher." While shopping, she saves Winn-Dixie from the pound by insisting that the stray wreaking havoc in the store really belongs to her.
The novel is a lovable, entrancing tale, about the relationships children hold with adults and with animals. Opal adjusts to a new town, gains confidence and courage through her dog. Published by Candlewick Press in 2000, this wise and heartwarming tale will endear readers to Opal's welcoming first-person narrative. Enough courage, in fact, to ask her father about the mother who abandoned her years ago. During a party, Winn-Dixie runs off. Readers will stick to their chairs as they take a ride along with Opal, wondering if she will she ever find her dog, her place in her home, or acceptance of the mother who left her.
Book Review: Because Of Winn Dixie Summary: 5 Stars
Who let the dog in!!! Woof! Woof! Woof! Woof! Woof! This book is called Because of Winn Dixie. Winn Dixie is a dog. He is a trouble maker.
. The author of this book is Kate DiCamillo and the genre is realistic fiction. The setting is at a small town like at church, store, and at the library. Opal is a girl and she is ten and her mother left her alone with her dad. Opal has a dad. His name is the Preacher. In this book is that there are two bald headed boys that bully her.
My favorite part in the book was when Opal went to the Winn Dixie store, found the dog, and called it Winn Dixie. Also my favorite part was when the dog made a big mess in the store. He dropped the tomatos, cereal, and other stuff in the store and the manager got mad and Winn Dixie licked his face. Positive things about the book are that it reminds me of when I met my best friend and of stormy days. I would give these book 5 stars.
Book Review: Great Summer Reading Summary: 5 Stars
This book was about a young boy who had to go to an orphanage after his mother's death. Occasionally the children would be farmed out to a foster home. Experiences in these homes were not always positive. Bud's prized (and only) possesion was his suitcase and the items inside. One of the items in the suit case happens to be a flyer for a band, in which one of the members Bud suspects is his father.
My son had to read two books this summer and write a report for school on each book. One of those books assigned was this one. After reading both he said that he liked this one the best. I've only had an opportunity to read a couple of chapters, but it held my attention. I look forward to reading the rest of the story. I'm giving this book five stars based on my son's (age 10) review and the couple of chapters I read.
