Customer Review: Disappointing book from a good author

I've read all of young Mr. Phelps true crime books and in a review for one of his previous books I called him the best true crime writer in America today. (I even preordered this book in April) I think that probably still holds true because Mr Phelps does an extensive in depth investigation and takes the time to write the book using more than just the court transcritps.
Its difficult to put into words how this horrible crime was just basically a run of the mill tragedy when you try to put the crime into a true crime book. Don't misunderstand what I am trying to say. I am horrified that this could happen between a child, her boyfriend and the mother but when you look at what America has become this is so tragically commonplace.
I knew what was going to happen after reading the first chapter and I feel this is where Mr Phelps made his first mistake that he should have seen coming.
In his previous books we followed the unsolved mysteries along with the police and we turned each page not knowing what clue wold turn up next eventually helping to unravel the crime.
I always say that the best true crime books are unsolved mysteries that us as readers eagerly turning the pages not knowing what is going to happen next. That formula represents less 10% of the true crime books marketed today. Most true crime writers let you know the crime and who did it in the first chapter and its downhill from there. I just toss those books in the garbage. Those books appear to be written in a long weekend using the transcripts.
Author Phelps, on the other hand, appeared to know the formula for writing a "page turner" until this book. The book basically dealt with 4 people, and don't take this the wrong way especially Chris, but there was not enough in this crime for 400 pages of words.
If I were to write a true crime book I would search for a "cold case" of maybe 20 years that was recently solved or a case with a lot of twists and turns. Examples are Carlton Stowers "Careless Whispers", the other books by Mr. Phelps, or the John List case.
In the very last chapter the author admits he was fascinated by the case and that it happened in his own backyard so he read about it every day. Thats why he picked to write about the case. The police had the case solved the same night and that should have been a hint that the case might not transfer as well as some other case into a true crime book.
I certainly wish this gifted writer well in his next book.
