Informative but not factual, August 21, 2005
Reviewer: Shaw (Florida) - See all my reviews
I bought this book with the expectations that it would provide me with a guidline of what to do to improve the health of my hair and get rid of the shedding. It did provide a guidline of which I had to purchase (very EXPENSIVE) products, Dudley's and Nexxus. After using the products for about 3 weeks I saw little to no improvement with the shedding and dryness. I thought maybe I wasn't using the products correctly and thats why they didn't work for me. So what I learned from this book is that hair is a very picky subject. If you don't follow the regimens exactly, you will see no improvement in your hair and that may not be the fault of the writer but you own fault instead. Instead now, I go to the salon for my relaxers (one good point brought up by the book) and I deep condition (with cholestarol) atleast once a week and constantly keep my hair moisturized. I decided that I would rather spend my money going to the hair salon more often, then spending money uselessly on expensive hair care products that may not work for me. Because of that epiphany, my breakage is becoming less and less!
I did not like the fact that the book said that no-lye relaxers are not good for the hair. After researching that statement I found that no-lye nor lye relaxers are good for the hair, they both break down the bonds of the hair which cause them to be weaker.
I also did not like that you could tell that the book was written by different people but there is no clarification of who is saying what!
Purchasing this book was not a complete waste of my time. The book was truly motivational and informative but I don't feel that it met its objective to the fullest of stopping my hair breakage problem. But those who are interested should purchase this book, just because it didn't work for me doesn't mean that it won't work for you.

Not too impressed, July 17, 2005
Reviewer: Lorraine J. Stephens "aspiring novelist" (Houston, Texas) - See all my reviews
I read this book about a month ago and it really did not impress me at all. First of all I do appreciate someone trying to help us with our hair problems, but this book seems more like a commercial for over priced hair products rather than a guide. Following some of his advice to buy Nexxus and Dudley products that you can only get online or in expensive salons MIGHT help you with your damaged hair problems, but it will more so contribute to your financial problems. I am too through with anything by Nexxus. After ordereding some of their vitatress products online my hair was just as bad as its ever been, maybe even worst. After shelling out about $50 dollars to the Nexxus company and faithfully following the regimes day in and day out I ended up with dry, lifeless hair and no end to my split ends. My hair was falling off and breaking off all over the place. I used the expensive Nexxus products, but it did more damage than good because I don't think they created those products for "OUR" hair textures. After I stopped using the products and with the advice of a good friend/stylist I was able to achieve healthy hair by simply...
trimming my ends once every two months
waiting a full 8 weeks between lye, yes I said it lye relaxers careful not to overlap on previously relaxed hair
washing and conditioning my hair every 4 to 6 days, deep conditioning every two weeks
and wrapping up my hair every night with a silk scarf
with these simple steps, regular beauty supply products that cost under $10 dollars and a little patience people always ask if I'm wearing a wig or a weave, but it's my own hair. Shamboosie tried, but you don't need this huge manual, just time, appreciation for your unique texture and very little money.

New To His Regimen - Seems To Work, July 4, 2005
Reviewer: Tupelo Honey "HoneeBee" (USA) - See all my reviews
I ordered this book when I joined a book club, not knowing the valuable information within. I have natural hair and never paid the book much attention since it had little information on natural hair care/press and curl.
When my daugther's and my hair began drying out and breaking off, I went online to find information on black hair care and came across this book. I then remember I had the same book and started reading.
Although I have not stuck the Shamboosie exact regimen, I have notice a difference in mine and my daughter's hair since I've started using the shampoo. I use Kera Care Humuctress Cream Conditioners because of it natural herbs and mix it with IC High Potency Cream Constructor, with plastic cap and sitting under a hair dryer for at least 20 minutes. I apply Infusium-23 leave in treatment after I rinse the conditioners out and my hair comes out quite lovely, but now I will give his regimen at try and follow it exactly as he as stated since the reviews say it really works.
I will write a reveiw three months from now to let you guys know if his regimen is better than the one I'm using.
The reason I'm only give the book three stars is because I've just began reading the book and exercising some of the regimen on my daugther's damanged hair. I will say it seems to be working.
I've also notice that some people have sent Shamboosie an e-mail with questions regarding his advise. Does anyone have his e-mail address or know his website. I have some questions of my own that are not answered in his book.

Healthy Hair, March 3, 2005
Reviewer: I. Alston "tula girl" (Raleigh, NC) - See all my reviews
I bought this book in November 2004. I have always tried things on my hair to get it to grow and I would get frustrated and cut it off. I purchased this book and followed the regimen and my hair has grown almost an inch every month. Great advise for coloring and home care. My hair is at its best! Remember if you purchase the book you have to follow the regimen. You can't do some of the things and expect the same results. It works, I have an additional 3 inches of hair to prove it.

A Must Have For People with Chemically Relaxed Hair, January 15, 2005
Reviewer: LKW "arawandme" (Phoenix, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
I was surfing the net for a hair care book that would help me with my hair problems. I read the reviews for Beautiful Black Hair and ordered it. My hair was dry, brittle, and thinning in spots. I read Shamboosie's book and was so impressed with the information that it provided, it was hard to put it down. I finished it in one day. I ran out and purchased the products he recommended that same night and he is absolutely correct, the right products make a world of difference. I followed the formula's he recommended and saw results after the second treatment. My hair looks and feels so much better. He knocks no-lye relaxers and that's okay because I don't use it anyway. However, I do know people with very beautiful healthy hair that does. As he points out, the key to a great head of hair is conditioner, conditioner, conditioner. Definitely one of the best hair care books on the market especially for women or men with flat cell (kinky) hair.

Pleasantly Surprised, September 23, 2004
Reviewer: Brenda Burrell (Milwaukee, WI) - See all my reviews
I ordered the Beautiful Black Hair book, as part of an free offer for enrolling in a book club. I was very doubtful about the promises of having longer, stronger, healthier hair with following Shamboosie's program. I purchased the suggested products and followed the conditioning program every four days. Within three weeks, I noticed a great difference in my hair. The first thing a I noticed, was my hair not shedding or falling out every time I combed it. My hair appeared softer and had a shine to it. I was so surprised!! I actually bought a product that does what it promises to do. I am sold. I have been following this program for three months. My hair is stronger, looks very healthy and is easier to manage. I receive positive comments from peers and family about the condition of my hair. Shamboosie's book is easy to read and follow. He gives real solutions, and a step by step guide towards achieving your goal. This book was very helpful and informative to me. It enlightened me on all the damage I had been doing to my hair all these years. I want to thank Shamboosie for this book, and making it available to all black women. GREAT BOOK!!

This book was great. I first took notice to it when my sister started reading it. I noticed that her hair began to get longer. At first I didtn think it was the book but then I tried it for myself. Within the first 3 weeks I could see a differnce in my hair. Shamboosie really knowns what he is talking about when it comes to black womens hair. This book is easy to follow and it really does make a differnce in the lenghth of your hair. I would advise all black women to read it.

Mrs. America Pageant Hair!, April 1, 2004
Reviewer: Sabrina O'Malone (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
Shamboosie is the ONLY hairdresser on the planet that I allow to touch my hair. This is not an exaggeration. The man knows what he's talking about and what he's doing.
I loved this book. Before I read it, no matter how hard I tried, my hair would break off when it reached 4 inches in length. I asked myself if it could be true that most of the blame was in the "no-lye" relaxers and the wrong products.
You can take it from me...everything he says in this book is true. (And I wasn't totally convinced until my hair grew so long that it reached the middle of my back)
My hair looked GORGEOUS in the Mrs. America Pageant. (I was Mrs. New Jersey)
Do yourself a favor and buy this book for yourself and anyone you know and love who's tired of wasting money on weaves, curling irons, grease and the other tools of the trade. It'll be the best investment you've ever made in your appearance.
See my hair for yourself: Look at the back of the cover of my new book PRAYERS FOR THE WORKING MOM: 7 SECRETS TO PHENOMENAL SUCCESS.
That's really my hair!
No weaves.
Absolutely no "no-lye".
No inferior products in my house, let alone my hair.
And the hair grows and grows.

Great Reading..., February 9, 2004
Reviewer: Sorel from Michigan - See all my reviews
Before purchasing this book, I had read several books, magazines, and articles on black hair care. Many of them were quite informative, however, none of them as insightful and informative as Beautiful Black Hair. This book is great because it identifies the hair problems, offers simple to understand explainations, gives step-by-step solutions, and offers product suggestions. I have had this book for almost 3 months and have followed the authors easy instructions. Like some of the other readers my hair has never been healther and grown so well. He recommends Nexxus and Dudley products, but only after trying many others. These products have worked great on my hair. Get it to read and learn for yourself, you won't be sorry.

Don't buy into the hype on this book!, January 26, 2004
Reviewer: A reader
When I read I started reading the reviews for this book, I had high hopes. Those hopes were soon dashed, however, when I started reading. I have read several books on the topic of black hair care, and this has to be one of the worst. It didn't tell me anything new (what I understood of it). It was so vague. For instance, he would say something along the lines of make sure you use a good conditioner. Okay..but what makes a good conditioner? Another thing, he only suggest Nexxus and Dudley products (Does he work for them?). Another thing, he seems to have something personal against no-lye relaxers. Every other page was a warning against using them. Keep your money people!
