Book Reviews of Beatrix Potter The Complete TalesBook Review: Timeless entertainment for all ages... Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book for my nephews last Christmas, which contains all of Beatrix Potter's work in one volume. At first I had wanted to get the individual books, in the same format she had them printed, but it made sense to buy one large book because of the shipping costs (since I live so far away).
First off, the book is quite heavy, but this actually works for me, because reading time with my nephews becomes an important event. One of them gets to retrieve the book with great ceremony, and gather around. I first thought that the stories might not be to their liking; I was very pleasantly surprised to find that they really enjoy the stories, and the illustrations simply bring the words to life. If there are words they do not understand, it is easy enough to pause for a moment and explain. One of the older boys doesn't enjoy reading, but these stories have made him more interested in knowing what will happen next, as Ms. Potter's stories do have a sense of suspense and timing.
As an adult reader who never got to read more than just Peter Rabbit's story, the background information of each story was fascinating to me, and this actually made me watch the movie "Miss Potter" (which I also liked very much).
It's no wonder these stories have stood the test of time. This edition is well worth the price.
Book Review: An excellent complete edition of great stories Summary: 5 Stars
Who hasn't heard of Peter Rabbit? These are some of the best children's art and stories in the English language, presented in a single hardcover volume, with a nice slipcover covered by a sturdy hard box. What's not to love? There is one misgiving I have about the stories and that is that the pictures were evidently larger in the original books, and while they are reproduced well here, they are definitely on the small side. You should be warned that the language was definitely written in a pre-Dick and Jane era, when children's authors weren't afraid to throw in a few big words. There are also quite a few English and rural colloquialisms. All of this makes it difficult for littler readers to follow, but this shouldn't pose too big of a problem. The stories are also in many (not all!) cases rather slow-moving for a modern audience, like Milne's Pooh books. None of these things should stop you from buying and reading these with your kids. Indeed, it will help expose them to another way of thinking about the world, not so hurried, jaded, competitive, or anxious to look "cool."
Book Review: A must have book Summary: 5 Stars
I have five children, and we love the world through Beatrix Potter's eyes.
After checking out each individual story numerous times, and even some of the DVDs, we finally broke down and bought the collection. We love the beautiful watercolor illustrations, and the British dialog and 19th century customs. I think my two particular favorite tales are The Fierce, Bad Rabbit, and the Pie and the Patty Pan. It was really hard to choose just two.
It's fun to sit down and just start reading from this collection of stories. In no time, we had read them all, and children were pushing to hear their favorite story first.
Every now and then, someone will quote one of the stories, saying something silly like, "someone's been digging up MY nuts," or "Gammon, ha-ha..." You really have to read the stories to know what we're talking about. It's a way to create a secret culture of inside jokes with your family.
This is definitely one of my 10 favorite children's books.
Book Review: Pass this book on from generation to generation! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a lovely book that comes in a sturdy, decorative, open-eneded box to protect the volume. Besides containing all of Beatrix Potter's wonderful children's stories, it has all of the original illustrations in one volume. This is the perfect "bedtime story" book, and it sits on the nightstand next to my 11-old-granddaughter's bed. She reads the stories to her 3-year-old sister every night, and is planning on continuing the tradition with her 1-year-old brother. She told me that she is enjoying the stories as much as her little sister!
I purchased this book as a gift for their family, and, as a proud grandmother, I can't think of anything that costs so little and yet gives so much. I would recommend this book for anyone! I am going to purchase another copy for my own house, just in case I have guests who show up with little ones. It's a perfect addition to anyone's library, and I highly recommend it.
Book Review: Bedtime reading turned into morningtime reading, too! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this single book collection of Beatrix Potter stories because our oldest, aged four, loves Peter Rabbit. We had planned to read one story per evening before bed but the great writing style and pictures of Ms. Potter so grabbed our four year old's attention that we ended up reading one at bed, at rising in the morning and before nap time. Even my husband would drop what he was busy with to come and listen to storytime! The adventures and the names Ms Potter came up with are charming and fun to say. One does have to know some Engligh terms and be able to explain those vocabulary on the quick but it sure is fun to hear your child increase his vocabulary with the neighbor kids! We have certainly gotten a hoot out of the appropriate word usage he has picked up from these stories and then will explain to his friends to help "teach" them. We've read through this book many times to our delight.
