Book Reviews of Beat the Reaper: A Novel

Book Review: You have to read this book! Yes, you'll thank me!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've read a book a day since I was five years old (that's many years ago). If I'm lucky, the book is pretty good. Sometimes it's really good. About two pages into this one, I knew I'd love it, and I did.

Why? It's that well written. The character(s) are wonderful. The story is compelling. You just can't wait to keep reading, to see what happens next. And it never disappoints.

Just buy it. Just read it. You'll love it.

Book Review: Just Another Jewish Kid Turns Hit Man Turns Snitch Turns Doctor Story
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was one of the nicest suprises I've had in months! Author Josh Bazell, a doctor / first time novelist, has created a completely unique and wonderful book. Written in the first person, the hero is a Jewish kid intent on getting revenge for his grandparents. Along the way he becomes a martial arts expert, a hit man, and a doctor. Very funny dialogue and plot, weird and wonderful characters, Bazell is a major talent!

Book Review: Addictive fun read!
Summary: 5 Stars

What a fun read! This real-life intern's novel about a "good-guy" ex-mafia-hitman turned MD intern by way of a witness protection program is witty, tightly plotted, exciting and outrageously funny, and seems to teach one a lot about anatomy and physiology along the way -- though there is a disclaimer about that at the end of the book. Read the first few pages on the Amazon "Look Inside" feature and you'll be hooked -- I was!

Book Review: An Exhilarating Read
Summary: 5 Stars

Beat the Reaper is a first-rate thriller with an engaging narrative voice. Bazell does a terrific job using unconventional narrative touches (such as footnotes) and medical facts to build authority for the acton of the story. He gets one or two small details wrong with the more criminally oriented subject matter (guns, for example, are never "painted"), but those are minor quibbles with otherwise fantastic debut.

Book Review: More, please.
Summary: 5 Stars

This book takes off like a rocket and doesn't slow down. Ever. A more compulsive page-turner I have not read in ages. Bazell has the gift all great novelists have: to keep you constantly wanting to know what happens next. It's funny, and dark, and depressing, and uplifting. It's cynical and idealistic. But most of all, it's entertaining as hell.

I can't wait for the next one.
