Book Reviews of Beat the Reaper: A Novel

Book Review: This book is absolutely awesome
Summary: 5 Stars

I picked this up and read the first couple of pages to see if I would like it, based on a review in the NY Times. I was unable to put it down. From the language to the story to the odd little post-modern aspects like the footnotes, this book was fantastic. If you like Charlie Huston, Jason Starr, etc., crime/noir books with a sense of humor, this is for you. I was really surprised by how taken I was with this book. As it went on it just got better and better. I can't wait for his next one. Again, this was great and was an utterly compelling read. I highly recommend it.

Book Review: Medical / mafia / martial arts mayhem
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a thrilling novel of outrageous proportion that is so crazy it is probably true. Ex-mafia hit-man Peter Brown now an MD at a NYC hospital is recognized by a gangster. Our hero fends off the mafia with one hand while he saves lives with the other with a little help from his martial arts expertise. The story is fast paced far fetched and oh so enjoyable. There are violence, sex, drugs, sharks (yes I said sharks) and other goodies sprinkled throughout so I wouldn't recommend this book to the faint of heart. I look forward to the next from Josh Bazell.

Book Review: Fabulous!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an incredible book on myriad imbricating levels--all interlocking with seamless panache. Bazell's voice is fresh. His sense of tempo and humor superb.

Beat The Reaper is an incredibly crafted sardonic romp, and, contrary to the few naysayers, Bazell does not ask us to, in Housman's phrase, traverse brooks too broad for leaping; it has a rare verisimilitude for its genre. I could not put it down. Indeed, I am suffering from PBDS (post-book depressive syndrome). Am eagerly waiting for Bazell's next effort.

Book Review: READ IT OR WEEP
Summary: 5 Stars

DON'T BE THE LAST ON YOUR BLOCK to read this high-octane and hilarious thriller which will have you breathing hard through the whole 5 hours you'll be holding the damp covers in your clammy hands.
hard to imagine a book that is educational AND sensational but here it is. you'll be lost in a uniquely entertaining world and ready for the next installment from this young author! (and also primed, it seems, to see the Leo DiCaprio movie they're planning to make from this hot little number.....)
no trying this at home, kids.

Book Review: waiting anxiously for his next book
Summary: 5 Stars

because this one is a HOME RUN. Yeah, the language is harsh...SO IS THE CHARACTER. One review said 'especially in the beginning'. well it was through out. You're shocked at first but once you settle into actually liking this guy, you're IN THE STORY. And the detail. Oh, the detail. I'll leave it to the reader to enjoy.
If you like gritty and funny and scary and yeah, a little bit sexy (I thought he was anyway) this book is a must read.
I just hope he doesn't turn out to be a one-hit wonder.
