Book Reviews of Beat the Reaper: A Novel

Book Review: "Critical Care: A Novel" meets "Darkly Dreaming Dexter"
Summary: 5 Stars

I picked this up on a whim at "Borders" (sorry, Amazon), read a few pages, and was hooked. I mean, a pigeon squaring off against a rat as prelude to an unsuccessful mugging?!?!!! Who thinks of this stuff?

Anyway, the book itself is full of all sorts of medical, movie, WWII, mafia, and martial arts trivia. It really does read as my title describes. I really can't say more without betraying the plot. Just buy the book, enjoy it, and hold onto it. If the guy's next book is anything like this, you'll have a collectible.

Oh, and did anyone catch the "Firesign Theater" reference?

Book Review: A refreshing thrill ride
Summary: 5 Stars

The main character, Peter, is a new doctor, with a secret mob past, working in a hilariously pathetic excuse for a hospital, where everyone seems to spend more effort to cover their own behind rather than help patients. The writing is irreverent and jammed with cruel ironies that made me laugh out loud. Not your typical doctor, Peter is trained in martial arts and abuses prescription medications. The action is non-stop. Peter's new life in medicine collides with his old life in the mob. I finished this book in two days, and can't wait for the next from this promising author. Highly recommended.

Book Review: New Author scores
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this book and want to read more from this author. It would be great if he would bring back the same main character. While reading I wondered if the author himself had Mafia experience, or just watched the Sopranos. Mario Puzo would be proud. I'm going to go back and read it again. Also I'm glad I didn't read this book before I went to the hospital for a broken leg, but have to admit I don't think my North Carolina hospital was anything close to the NY hospital portrayed, but I did have insurance. Anyway the medical info was eyeopening and showdown at the end was eyepopping.

Book Review: Wilder than Mr. Toad's Wild Ride!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Yes the story was far-fetched at times, but I loved the wild ride. Peter Brown is a very complex character - brutal and caring - hitman to doctor. The final scene made my stomach turn and I couldn't read fast enough to see where is was going. I hope Josh Bazell writes more about Peter Brown. The book ended like there was to be more.... I liked the footnotes. I first thought of Lisa Lutz and her use of them and then I saw that she had written a blurb on the book cover. Coincidence? It was an outrageous, brutal, funny, gruesome, fantastic read. Can't wait for more from Josh Bazell!

Book Review: I'm so tired because...
Summary: 5 Stars

I couldn't put this book down, and was compelled to read it all in one sitting. The cover threw me a little, but I was happily surprised and pleased after reading only the first few pages. I can't stop thinking about this book, and might actually read it again before returning it to the library.

No, it isn't perfect, but if this is a FIRST novel, Bazell's writing is only going to get better, with the plot and characters becoming even more fleshed-out and engrossing. I cannot wait!

Now, please excuse me, I have to Google fibulas, I G Farben, and the LCN.
