Book Reviews of Beat the Reaper: A NovelBook Review: Tarantino in Scrubs Summary: 5 Stars
This very smart thriller may border at times on the smart aleck-y, but it certainly delivers the action amid lots of offbeat medical lore. Indeed, the atmosphere is so vivid and believable that at times I wished this was a straightforward, Heller-esque novel about the medical profession today. Not for too long though, as the lurid tale of crime and revenge unfolds at a breakneck pace. The sensational climax (where our hero really has to dig deep within himself to find the resources necessary to face his antagonists) is unlikely to be forgotten. I just wish there was a bit more of a dramatic payoff to the scene, as by this time the wretched, remorseless villain of the piece was every bit as memorable as the hero. An audacious debut.
Book Review: The Bearclaw, Skinflick & more..... Summary: 5 Stars
Awesome, throw down, knock out, kick to the teeth action story with alot of medical facts thrown in randomly....
1st time author Josh Bazell did a fantastic job on "Beat the Reaper", its the best & grittiest book I've found in awhile!
Bazell is a real life doctor and when I read this book, I got the feeling he doesnt care whether or not it sells a million copies, he wrote "real" life down on paper, of course its real life with the Mafia, shark tanks, sex, drugs and alot of killing
The last few chapters of this book are unbelievable, sick and amazingly fascinating...
Highly recommended book, hope Bazell writes many more....

Book Review: A Rollercoster Riot! Summary: 5 Stars
Beat the Reaper is a rip-roaring rollercoaster riot of mayhem. I was laughing out loud on the second page and the rest of the book only got better and better. It's extremely vulgar, violent, and inventive; a drop-dead funny tale told in deadpan style by a very scary protagonist. I hadn't blazed through a book that fast since Michael Crichton died. There are a few things that don't make all the sense in the world, but I was having too much fun to care. All this grotesque merriment is perfectly set up for a series and I can't wait. Can the movies be far behind? Josh Bazell is about to become a very rich man. Buy this book for yourself, give it to your friends, read it to your teenage boys as a bedtime story. Thank you, Josh Bazell!
Book Review: Couldn't Put it Down! Summary: 5 Stars
Josh Bazell spins a suspensful tale without confusing the reader or making the work unbelievable. He puts raw emotion in his character's love while striking a decidedly deliberate and emotion-free tone for Peter Brown's (and Pietro Brwna's for that matter) profession. I loved Brown's matter of fact recounting of his life, his grandparents' lives and the fact that he accepted it on its own terms. He didn't cry out 'why me?'; he just dealt with it. I found myself engrossed in the character of Brown and when I read the last page, I desperately wanted more. First person stories really let you get into a character's head and frankly, I didn't want to get out of Dr. Peter Brown.
Book Review: Beat the Reaper is Terrific!!! Summary: 5 Stars
"Beat the Reaper" is one of the most original and outrageous mysteries I've read in a long time. How many mysteries have footnotes, many of them very funny? The whole idea of a former hit man turned doctor working in a hospital one only hopes is imaginary, got me into the book in no time. The fact that the author is a doctor makes the book informative about the downside of medical care and not a little bit chilling. I'm glad I read it after being released from our local hospital for emergency surgery because I wouldn't have let anyone operate on me again without suitable protection from the medical staff. The author for example. I recommend this book highly.
