Book Reviews of Bats at the LibraryBook Review: The Opening Book to a Unit on Libraries Summary: 5 Stars
As a teacher, I'm always looking for "hooks" to entice my kids to pay attention. I used this book with a group of fifth graders prior to visiting a nearby public library.
The illustrations (which have lots of details and goings on) drew my students in and the prose, though simple, produced many giggles and snorts. They all loved the idea of bats believing a visit to the library as an special adventure.
When we arrived at the library, the students found themselves looking for opportunities for their own adventures and tied theirs in with those in the book. (I clued in the librarian who hosted us before this activity.) In the end, I believe that the charm of the book made what many considered a dreary fieldtrip into something much more interesting.
I would use this book with any child prior to visiting a library: it will open their eyes to what they might have missed.
Book Review: As delightful as first. Summary: 5 Stars
Bats at the library was as fun as Bats at the beach. Every so often the librarian forgets to close a window. Word gets out and the bats head for a night at the library.
There a fun to be had by all. Be it reading books, shaping shadows on a wall, playing with the photo copier, and telling stories.
The artwork is great. Be sure to point out things such as the bats hanging in a limb. A little one might get a laugh if you point out the fact they are upside down and there is a roof top at the top of the page. There are references to other books such as Goodnight Sun, Make way for Bats and Mr. Bats wild ride.
As with the beach the story and the words flow well.
If your child liked Bats at the Beach, they will like this book as well!
Book Review: A Batty Adventure for Kids and Adults to Enjoy Summary: 5 Stars
I'm taking a little break from a great serious read, The Hour I First Believed: A Novel -- Very good, but 750+ pages.
I found this wonderful children's book at the library: Bats at the Library, written & illustrated by Brian Lees. The book was released in September-2008. Written in rhythm and rhyme style. This batty adventure is full of silliness, but also references some classic children's literature. In the illustrations, children may recognize some characters from books they may have already read. The illustrations are terrific too. Recommended for children 4-8, as well as for young at heart adults--like me.
Book Review: delightful story, bats are not just for Halloween Summary: 5 Stars
This is a delightful story for beginner readers or for parents to read to their young children. The bats are not spooky, or scary. This is not a Halloween story. The bats show human characteristics, which can be forgiven as this adds to the charm of the book and helps children feel comfortable with the animals. Children should be taught that bats are wild animals. However, this book goes a long way to dispel much misinformation about bats, such as they are ugly, dirty, disease carrying vermin.
Many of my favorite childhood books are depicted in the wonderful illustrations. Here is another opportunity for parents to entice their children to read and to teach the importance of reading.
Book Review: My kids are batty for Brian's "Bats" series Summary: 5 Stars
Just when I proclaimed "Bats at the Beach" my favorite book, this next one comes around and I can't decide which I love more. "Bats at the Library" is a favorite at our house because my kids (10 and 6) can identify the classic characters in Brian's beautiful illustrations, so it becomes both a great story for bedtime and a "game" - and a platform to talk about the importance of reading and literature. The illustrations have subtle humor and references that adults will enjoy as much as the young readers... it's a fun, smart book that celebrates reading and builds a love for books. What more can you ask for? A great addition to a child's library or a quality gift.
