Book Review: Hardly Remembered But Once Great

Who now remembers that Baghdad (and all of Iraq) was once a great center of Jewish life, and that Jews were well assimilated in the Iraqi community? If you are curious about this important Sephardi Jewish community (many members of which migrated to Israel in the early 1950's), this book will inform you pleasantly. My only complaint is the author's tendency to mention so many VIPs with whom he had only marginal contact.

A wise and often gently funny memoir by one of the world's authorities on Arabic literature, this book offers an intimate view of Jewish life in Baghdad in the 1930s and 40s. It describes vividly the young writer's intellectual and emotional growth and maps the now-vanished world of Baghdad's book stalls and literary cafes, its Arabic-speaking Jewish bank clerks, tuxedoed Iraqi-Jewish weddings, outdoor movies at the Cinema Diana, and bonfires by the Tigris.
