Book Reviews of the Bad Luck and Trouble (Jack Reacher, No. 11)Customer Review: Bad Luck and Trouble - Reacher is a Renaissance man Summary: 5 StarsI love Jack Reacher books. He is an expert sniper. He is an expert at ballistics. He is an expert criminologist. He has no equal in unarmed combat. etcetera etcetera.
But in this book he becomes an expert of math? OK...he isn't solving linear algebra equations or doing theoretical mathematics, but he has an unhealthy love of prime numbers and number patterns. And this just sprung up out of no where. In previous books, he has made some pretty amazing shots. A good working knowledge of geometry, windage, elevations, etc. are all good traits for a sniper, which he is since he won a coveted marine sniper competition. But this new ability just kind of caught me by surprise.
With that out of the way, this is a great book. I read it one sitting as I do all Jack Reacher novels. He didn't make as many "leaps of logic" this time as he did in previous books. Primarily because he has help this time around. His old special M.P. squad is helping him out. And each one had a skill that came in handy right when he needed it. One is super rich. One figured out a password that no one else could. One is even better at math then he is. So Jack didn't have to solve everything himself.
He does go a bit darker in this book. He steals money from "corner boys" (the kids on the street that sell), and the way it is described makes it sound like he has done it many times before. I guess he figures it is a victimless crime because the person purchasing the drugs isn't going to come forward, and the person being robbed surely isn't going to come forward. Of course it comes back and bites him later.
A few other actions in the book make me think that Mr. Child is going to start exploring the darker side of being a drifter. I'm actually looking forward to that tangent. Even with all his super human skills, it would be nice to see Jack actually have to struggle and have some moral dilemmas every once and awhile.
