Book Review: Absolutely Wonderful!

When I was in fourth or fifth grade, our school had a fundraiser auction. One of the families there were close to the Autrys and managed to get a signed copy of this book for us to auction off. I saved everything I had to get it for my grandpa who loved Gene dearly, and lived a very similar life in the same areas himself - well, all the difficult, tough parts, at least. Anyways, it was a bit of a fight, but I managed to win the book and my grandpa cherished it until he died in 2001. At that point he gave it back to me. I read it for the first time shortly thereafter and have read it every year or two ever since.
I am glad to say my folks raised me with a wide variety of interests and introduced me to a wide variety of things - one of them being, the Cowboy. As a southern California boy for the first 35 years of my life, and a HUGE fan of the Angels, I was all the more excited to have this book. My copy is in good shape, though the cover is a bit torn here and there, but I cherish it now just as my grandpa did.
Anyways, about the book. Long story short, reading the book is not unlike sitting and listening to Gene tell a story. While it can be annoying for people to write as they speak, this is not a problem with this book. The stories are warm and delightful and always interesting. The first chapter alone pulls you in - again, as a grandpa telling you a story pulls you in. I want to tell you all about it, but I don't want to spoil it if you ever get the chance to read it yourself.
This is one of my favorite books and an important part of our family history. If you have any interest at all in Mr. Autry, frontier life, early Hollywood, and so much more, you will enjoy this book. It is a very easy and quick read.
