Book Review: Finally! An Author Who Concentrates On the Subject!

"Astronomy for Dummies" was a delightful read! But more importantly, the author--Stephen P. Maran--concentrated on the subject matter promoted by the book's title. I tire very quickly of authors who use science books to bash religion. Some scientists, who happen to be science writers, are quick to argue that religious dogma has no place in science; yet, these same scientists are just as quick to include religious topics in their books for the purpose of religious bashing. Rather hypocritical, if you ask me. However, Maran stays on track and addresses astronomical subjects in a very professional and unbiased manner. I thoroughly enjoyed "Astronomy for Dummies" and learned quite a few things I didn't know, which says a lot for the author's presentations because... I'm an avid astronomy reader. I bought the book for my nephew, and ended up reading it myself from cover to cover. It's a great intro to the astronomical sciences. For example, one of the chapters is entitled "Ten Common Errors about Astronomy and Space." I was intrigued by the following excerpt:
"In just about any movie about space travel, you see a scene in which the intrepid pilot skillfully steers the spaceship past hundreds of asteroids that hurtle past in every direction, sometimes coming five at a time. Moviemakers just don't understand the vastness of the solar system, or they ignore it for dramatic purposes. If you stood on an asteroid smack dab in the middle of the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, you'd be lucky to see more than one or two asteroids, if any, with the naked eye."
The entire book is just as informative, interesting, and filled with these kinds of revelations. Buy the book! You'll be glad you did.
