Will Aspen choose the woman she loves...or the forest she hopes to preserve...
- END OF BACK COVER TEXT
Two characters from tragedy-filled lives come together almost forcefully in this latest offering from Diane Tremain Braund. Braund is one of those dependable authors who always deliver a readable book. `Embers' is no exception.
Start with Aspen Brown, a local teacher and tree lover in a small town surrounded by forest. Aspen's family is gone and her only housemate is a crazy little half-blind dog who is the true master of the house. For years the forest has been responsibly harvested and regenerated. However, recently a new company has purchased the land and a new forester comes to town.
In walks Leigh Wright, forester extraordinaire. Leigh loves the trees and wants to treat them respectfully, but Aspen doesn't trust her. More specifically, Aspen doesn't trust the company - especially after they lay off all the lumberjacks and contract out that work. Rumor has it the company is planning to develop the land instead of maintain the forest. That rumor brings in trouble in the form of activists - one who aggressively pursues Aspen. Aspen is confused - feeling she should welcome the activist's advances and reject Leigh. However, she cannot deny her growing feelings for the forester. As the questions about what will happen to the land are answered, Aspen must decide if she will listen to her heart or her head.
These women can't refute their attraction, but sometimes there are things bigger than ourselves - things like deeply-rooted beliefs and passions. This struggle is what makes `Embers' a great book - different from many in the genre in clever ways, but similar in that these women cannot deny the love that is right before their eyes.
