Book Reviews of Arctic Chill: A Thriller

Book Review: Racism and murder in isolated Iceland
Summary: 5 Stars

The murder of a mixed-race boy outside a rundown apartment complex on a bleak winter evening in Reykjavik, Iceland, shines a cold spotlight on immigration and racism in this liberal Scandinavian land.

First published in Iceland in 2005, Indridason's fifth Detective Erlendur Sveinsson police procedural precedes Iceland's 2008 economic collapse. (I will be curious to seem how this spare, perceptive author weaves that catastrophe into the ordinary tragedies of murder and loss.) Many immigrants come for a better economic life - others are political refugees. The native citizens of this tiny, homogenous, heretofore rather isolated country, are often hostile.

Erlendur and his team, physical, non-reflective Sigurder Oli - "Sometimes Bergthora inadvertently revealed that she had more faith in Erlendur than in her husband when it came to criminal investigations. Sigurdur Oli knew that she meant well, but it got on his nerves." - and the more subtle Elinborg regard the child's body with horror.

"They were able to guess his age, but had more trouble determining which part of the world he came from."

The boy is about ten, lying in a half frozen pool of his own blood.

" `He must have been cold,' Elinborg muttered, withdrawing her hand and slowly getting to her feet."

Erlendur looks up at the balconies and imagines a fall. He "preferred that theory to the idea of the boy having been murdered. He could not pursue that thought through to the end."

But the boy, Elias, son of a Thai immigrant and Icelandic father, divorced, had been stabbed. His older half-brother, who is having difficulty adjusting to cold, strange Iceland, is missing, and his mother, a factory worker, is not yet home.

As Erlendur and his team inform the mother, and interview neighbors, school officials and classmates, a picture emerges of an often-lonely life. One of the teachers is especially hostile to immigrants while others are more circumspect, alluding defensively to the dilution of Icelandic culture.

Meanwhile Erlendur is more keenly than ever reminded of the long-ago death of his younger brother who was separated from him during a blizzard. Obsessed by stories of death by snow and avalanche, all but estranged from his troubled son and daughter, Erlendur's life has been shaped by this tragedy.

Complex, subtle and touchingly bleak, the story paints a vivid picture of a tough, insular society, resistant to change.

Summary of Arctic Chill: A Thriller

In this new extraordinary thriller from Gold Dagger Award winner Arnaldur Indridason, the Reykjavik police are called on an icy January day to a garden where a body has been found: a young, dark-skinned boy is frozen to the ground in a pool of his own blood. Erlendur and his team embark on their investigation and soon unearth tensions simmering beneath the surface of Ice land?s outwardly liberal, multicultural society. Meanwhile, the boy?s murder forces Erlendur to confront the tragedy in his own past. Soon, facts are emerging from the snow-filled darkness that are more chilling even than the Arctic night.
