Book Reviews of Anything Book, Classic Exec Series: Black

Book Review: A blank book is like a blank sky waiting for its clouds
Summary: 5 Stars

Few books are this good; when first seen, a causal reader may suspect there is nothing to it, but anything more than a hasty glance will discover the untold, unwritten unthought and undrawn wisdom of the ages.

"Mulier tum bene olet, ubi nihil olet," wrote Plautus, a Roman playwright (254 - 184 BC) who created the basic plot for the modern Broadway musical 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum'. Even earlier, William Shakespeare lifted the plot outline for 'Much Ado About Nothing' from Plautus.

"A woman smells nice when she smells of nothing," is the basic translation of the Latin. 'Nice' is a nice word, well chosen by Plautus who was noted for his cynicism about women. Instead of merely "nice", a woman smells best and beautiful when she smells of anything done with passion. A too perfumed odour is suspect of covering up 'mal aria' (such the smells of the Venetian canals); just as greedy and gluey smacking kisses of youth are suspect of masking the intent for something else.

This book is a metaphor for the soul. Alone, existence is meaningless. But when lived with someone or in a great love such as art or writing or music or performance, every delicious moment is filled with the delirious passion of a great and consuming idea.

Please, be not deceived. This book's opening pages are an image of utter nothingness. For some, such perfect nihilism overwhelms; for others, imagination fills it with the inexplicable wonders. From the superb lines of the Lascaux Cave arts to an elegant simple line drawn by a Picasso -- the world is what we make of it, not what is handed to us on a canvas or scrap of paper.

Books imprison words. It's why the Inuit People cleverly call writing "Words stay put". But words stuck to the pages of a book are like butterflies stuck on a pin; the beauty is impaled briefly, but it dries and fades and crumbles in time until all is mere dust.

Consider one relevant fact: For a thousand years, from the flight from Egypt to a few centuries before the birth of Christ, the Torah -- the first five "books" of the Christian Bible -- was never written. These words were too holy to be written; they could only be spoken. The 'Dead Sea Scrolls' are among the first written versions of the Torah, when the voice of God became "words stay put" on parchment.

Not long after, Israel was shattered by Roman armies. The story of Christ is a plea for "peaceful non-resistance" to save Jews from Roman swords. The destruction of Israel began with words that stayed put as various factions of Judaism argued and fought over words that died and were laid to rest on paper.

Our modern world is little different. From Osama bin Laden to Jerry Falwell and his ilk, words on paper are used to justify the vile hates of modern times. The curse of humanity is words that stay put, just as ancient Israel was divided and conquered and ruled after the Jews compiled their words.

So, what is the value of this book?

Its a blank sky waiting for clouds.

It is for words, for lines, for colours and shapes and curves as created by Picasso, Monet and the Lyndels of today. Think of a Venus de Milo or 'David' by Michaelangelo -- would such "lines stay put" be better had the originals been kept a few years? What is Venus with 50-plump-pounds of middle age comfort?

Creating a Venus de Milo is said to be an exercise in removing all the marble that doesn't look like Venus de Milo. This is as nonsensical as saying a pencil (or word processor) chooses words that stay put on paper. All art is a creation of the human soul, not of the marble or paper or digital bits or whatever else is used for its expression.

Thus we have a book as blank, pure, true and unblemished as a baby's bottom, or a woman without a scent. In time it can grow into an exciting fullness, just as a woman without a scent will acquire the fragrance of the inner soul of her passion.

Everything stays put on paper.

This book cries every day for its words, for its line, for every bit of colour and shadow and nuance. Left alone, every blank page will soon roar. Shared, every line and every word will comfort, delight, inspire and create wonder.
