Book Reviews of Anticancer: A New Way of LifeBook Review: Living in the tail of the curve Summary: 5 Stars
Having a family member with a rare cancer with a poor prognosis, I have to admit my hope was drained. Everywhere I looked there were no really hopeful answers and one treatment door after another seemed to be slammed in our faces. I am a person of faith, but I realize my faith was dashed by the very medical science we were looking for a cure in. I also look for evidence to support choices. There are many quacks who are preying on people and we've run into a fair share of them wanting to sell us their useless sugar pills in order to advance their down-line. Predators of the worst kind. We found this book and I admit I was sceptical at first, after all, here is another guy with something to sell. When I read Dr Servin-Schreiber's story and the first few chapters, I felt that here is someone who is interested in helping people. Everything is well documented. What Dr S does best in my mind is to give hope that perhaps with lifestyle changes, we can get a better long term outcome. Nothing looks harmful and the diet is really stuff that we've all heard for years. Dr S has done the work and compiled a lot of research into an understandable format and roadmap for anyone to follow, not only to fight the cancer you're in, but to avoid as best you can getting cancer. Dr S and I agree, we need to keep on doing what medical science has given us, but also do what we can with lifestyle to help ourselves in the battle. I bought this book for myself and my wife who's battling this enemy, and will buy it for our children as well. If you have a friend or loved one who's battling the disease, I would suggest getting it for them as well. If for no other reason than to give them hope that they can live in the tail of the curve.
Book Review: Terrific Summary: 5 Stars
Four years ago, I read a great book called Stop Inflammation Now! for heart health - I felt great very quickly after drastically changing my diet. Now I've fallen back on some bad habits, and this Anticancer book is kicking me back into focusing on reducing inflammation for overall health. (I need a book like this every year or two to keep me on track!)
I read a few sections of this Anticancer book here online, then ordered it 2-day shipping. It is quite an easy read, and very current and helpful. (I read about a study in the book in the evening, and then saw an article on that same study the next day at Reuters.com.) The day after the book arrived, I learned that a close coworker found out she had a tumor. I will recommend this book to her. It should offer hope to her as she has, according to this book, the best chance of recovery based on her very healthy lifestyle.

Very sadly, my very-healthy & energetic coworker passed away only a month & a half after learning she had cancer. I never had a chance to mention this book to her, & hadn't read the section yet that details what to eat to regain appetite when very sick with cancer - somewhere around page 105, I think. (This highlights to me that you can't depend on time for research & diet change AFTER learning you or someone you care about is sick.)
Today I ordered my 7th book. Coworkers keep asking me to get it for them after leafing through my own copy of this book.
Book Review: The best book about cancer I've read Summary: 5 Stars
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2008 and have read at least a dozen books on diet and cancer. This one is without a doubt the best of them all. After reading it, I got three more copies and gave one to my PCP, who loved it and has been recommending it to his patients as the best way to eat to be healthy, whether one has cancer or not. He was impressed with the research Dr. Servan-Schreiber has done in his work and that he refers to in the book. To quote him, Dr. S-S is "brilliant" and his research excellent. I also gave a copy to my oncologist who was very impressed with the book and thought the charts were excellent. I am reading the book again and following his recommendations as closely as possible. This is a great book and very accessible to the non-medical reader. Other cancer diet books go into way too much detail about the chemicals in food. He covers these but does so without overwhelming the reader with too much technical information. Now I'm going to buy a cookbook the author recommends by Dr. Richard Beliveau, who is also an expert on cancer.
I highly recommend this book. There are other good ones out there, but this one is by far the best. BTW, this is the first time I've written a book review on Amazon, but I've done so because I am that impressed with this book. Although I have eaten a healthy diet for years, I wasn't eating all the anti-cancer foods, but now I am armed with the information I need to beat this disease.
Book Review: Super, But Would Like More Information Summary: 5 Stars
I've had 8 female friends diagnosed with cancer in the past 2 years. These friends are aged from 30 to 49, do not smoke, do not drink heavily, are not overweight, and all but of them one has children. Needless to say, I wanted to learn more about cancer and how it might affect my family. I immediately started reading this book after it was delivered, and could not put it down. There were a lot of "aha" moments for me while reading this book. I feel like I've learned a lot about cancer and how I might be able to ward it off. If I had one suggestion on how to make this book better, I would ask the author for resources on locating foods he suggests eating. For instance, I've had a difficult time finding organic grass-fed dairy products. One local natural foods store did have organic milk made from grass-fed cows, but it was unpasturized. Because I have little kids, I'm wary of an unpasturized product. That unpasturized milk was the only grass-fed dairy product I found after looking all day at several markets...no cheese, yogurt, etc. Also, no employees at the markets knew if their organic poultry was grass-fed. Since I live in Sonoma County, California - an area where "local" and "organic" food stores are popular - I thought getting these foods would be easy. So far, it hasn't been that easy. I would love to know how and where the author shops, so I can feed my family the same wholesome food.
Book Review: Superb Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutely love....love this book! The good Doctor breaks everything down in laymen's terms....and the regimen to eat in an Anticancer way is not difficult...the foods are everyday foods (other than the Agave Nectar)a that can be found in every supermarket...I am a person with such a sweet tooth that I really could have gone through a 12-step program...I mean I was addicted...after 1 week on the regimen, I'm slowly weaning myself away from the sugar and the Agave Nectar is very good and pleasant tasting (unlike Stevia that I'd tried many moons ago) It tastes like honey, so I use it whenever I have a sweet craving...
I have breast cancer and this book has been such a god-send to me...it makes me feel that I can be proactive in my own treatment...that I can DO something about the illness...even if I never get well (I'm stage IV) it gives me a feeling of empowerment...plus.... The chemo has been making me gain weight and this new way of eating is couteracting the weight gain!
I like the fact that the author is speaking from experience and not just theory...he actually had cancer...this is a must-read for everyone...I've been telling all of my family and friends to get the book and apply the advice!!!
