Book Reviews of Angela's Ashes: A Memoir

Book Review: Wow...
Summary: 5 Stars

Angela's Ashes

What more is there to say about this book that hasn't already been said? This is what 5 star books are all about. No wonder it won the Pulitzer Prize.
Young Frankie McCourt is the poorest of the poor, growing up in Ireland during the 1940's... The book tells his experiences of his incredibly hard life, from his neglectful father, his dying siblings, the hunger and the rain, and most of all the suffering of his mother Angela...
I am not going to get into details, but rest assured this book has so many funny points and situations that it more than compensates for the abundance of tragedy and creates a magical balance of literature.
Anyone who loves to read must read this book. There are no exceptions - to skip this book means to skip an important lesson in life.

Book Review: Angelas Ashes
Summary: 5 Stars

Angelas Ashes is about a life full of struggle and determination. Frank McCourt survived against the odds while the world seemed stacked against him. During a time of great poverty the McCourt family kept their heads above water, literally in some occasions. While issues regarding children may upset you the story of his 1st communion will have you laughing. This is a great book for all ages, nationalities and income levels.

Angelas Ashes is similar to To Kill a Mockingbird in a few ways. Mostly family unity. Where would Scout be without the lessons and understanding she received? Frank McCourt also learned very early how important it is for family to stick together. This book was very well written and very informative about the time period.

Book Review: A monument to human endurance
Summary: 5 Stars

I resisted reading Angela's Ashes for a long time , simply thinking the book was over hyped.I saw Frank McCourt on PBS hosting a tour of Dublin pubs and his affability inspired me to pick this up. Now that I've given in my sense is that McCourt's genius in this was to write in the voice of his childhood self. The almost unbearable scenes of poverty and endless suffering he describes become through the eyes of a child something tangible and since it is a first hand account a testament of endurance and survival that ultimately lifts the spirit.

There are enough reviews below that summarize the outline of the story so I'll just say that occasionally a book or film live up to it's hype. Angela's Ashes is one of those books.

Book Review: Hope, hope and hope
Summary: 5 Stars

I had heard so many good things about this book that I was actually reluctant to read it. I thought that it could not measure up to the reviews- but it did. McCourt's prose reads like poetry. I encourage the reader to first listen to the CD of McCourt reading Angela's Ashes with his Irish tongue. Also, the movie is NOT a disappointment, and is a "must see" for those who loved the book.

McCourt gives away the struggles he and his family went through for decades, but through it all the book remains full of love, wonder, trimuph of spirit and will, exuberance and faith. A five star book, sometimes too painful to get through, but written with a spirit like no other I have ever read.

Book Review: One Of My Favorites Of All Time!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a must read! I just reread this book all in one sitting. It is such a wonderful, however tragic story. Despite the hardships throughout the book with alcoholism, poverty and premature death there were clever and hopefully moments as well leaving me with a "Hurrah" for Frankie! With Frankie's tribulations of an alcoholic father spending all his wages at the pub, too little or nothing to eat, loss of family and enduring Catholic School he seemed to remain unaffected by it all. An innocence of sorts. Frank McCourt's Memoir is a treasure to read and one which left me laughing, cheering and crying all at the same time. I highly recommend it!
