If you are an avid fan of car racing, then surely you know the name Dale Earnhardt, Sr. I remember the day I heard about his terrible crash. It was a very sad thing to hear, but I know that he died doing the thing that he loved the most: racing. This man achieved so much in his lifetime and was well known to the entire world. He was a great man. He was a great racecar driver. Tom Gillispie takes us inside the life and times of Dale Earnhardt, Sr., The Legend. In this book, we learn that Dale Earnhardt, Sr. was born into a family where his dad, Ralph Dale Earnhardt was also a car racer. Dale Earnhardt, Sr. followed in the footsteps of his daddy and became one of the world's best racecar drivers. He was followed by his son Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who still races today. Earnhardt, Sr.'s death was a shock to the nation. The news of it was delivered to people all over the world. It was unbelievable that Dale Earnhardt, Sr. was gone. Gone but not forgotten. His legacy lives on in our hearts and in the hearts of his family.

Whether you are a racing fan or not, an Earnhardt fan or not, this book is absolutely fantastic. It shows what life was like for Earnhardt Sr., and how he came to be loved by so many millions of fans. The book actually starts off when he was a young man, and goes all the way through his life, until his death. The book is full of information, and even pictures of the man, the legend. You will learn what his wins were and how he garnered so many of them. Family and friends were very important to Earnhardt. They were behind him in everything that he did. He was one of a kind. I recommend this book to people of all ages. It's a very enjoyable book, very informative and Gillispie gives so much insight into the life of this man. It was a wonderful read and I am proud to have been one to read it. I look forward to other Gillispie reads. This book however, was one in a million, just like the man it was written about!!

Summary of Angel in Black: Remembering Dale Earnhardt Sr.

Angel in Black: Remembering Dale Earnhardt Sr. is filled with personal memories of the man known as "the Intimidator" in NASCAR circles. These stories all come from the people who knew him best. Earnhardt was far more complex than those who did not know him well might have expected. His life ended tragically in February 2001 when he was killed during the last lap of the Daytona 500. His untimely death at the age of forty-nine shocked the racing world and the world at large.

In Angel in Black: Remembering Dale Earnhardt Sr., the Intimidator is remembered through hundreds of anecdotes, stories, and insights recounted by fellow drivers, team members, NASCAR officials, and friends and associates. Together they offer a unique and touching reminiscence of one of the greatest and most charismatic race-car drivers ever to climb behind the wheel.

NASCAR's Rookie of the Year in 1979, Earnhardt forged a career that included seven NASCAR national championships, seventy-six career wins, and over $34 million in prize money, more than any other driver has ever won. Earnhardt was as tough as they come behind the wheel, also earning the name of "Ironhead" in part because of his reputation for never backing down on the track, where close calls at nearly 200 miles per hour are frequent and often deadly. Angel in Black also shows the generous, considerate side of him as a friend, colleague, and family man.

An earlier, shorter version of this book was published in 2001 under the title I Remember Dale Earnhardt. About one-third of the material in Angel in Black comes from the first edition, and the rest is largely new material.
