Book Reviews of And the Sea Will Tell

Book Review: Vincent Bugliosi does it again!
Summary: 5 Stars

Once again, as with Helter Skelter, Vincent Bugliosi outdoes himself with this novel, "And The Sea Will Tell". It is a true story of a loving middle-aged couple named Mac & Muff that set sail on their yacht for a pleasureable two year cruise. They end up on the island of Palmyra where they meet a young couple named Buck & Stephanie (her real name). A tv movie was made from this book with Rachel Ward playing Jennifer & James Brolin & Deidre Hall as the murdered couple.

It is a riveting & suspenseful novel that one cannot put down until the end has been reached. The younger man, Buck, a degenerate man that isn't keen on working for a living, becomes extremely jealous of the older couple's wealth & beautiful yacht opposed to the younger couple's barely sailable crappy little vessel. It doesn't take long before animosity sets in & the older couple are murdered by Buck, without Stephenie's knowledge or so she claimed. They steal the gorgeous yacht & without any worries or guilt, embark on a pleasure cruise where they wine & dine & use the dead couple's money & supplies until they are caught & charged with boat theft.

Nothing more can be proven until six years later, a gruesome discovery is made not far from Palmyra. A couple find a skull that washes up on shore & the remains of Muff. At that, Buck & Stephanie are charged with Muff's murder. If it hadn't been for the great Bugliosi weaving his magic, I believe the girl would have spent the rest of her life in prison. She got off too easy & should have spent at least a number of years in jail. I find it hard to believe her complete story of total innocence. She is found innocent & her life goes on like Muff & Mac were never murdered hideously by her boyfriend & herself having this knowledge. Buck is found guilty of course & sentenced to life in prison. Mac's remains have never been found. A true nightmare of how great life can be one day, only to turn around the next & have it heartlessly snuffed out by a sociopath. Mac & Muff were in the wrong place at the wrong time & encountered imminent danger with this hippie couple. Buck deserved the death penalty with lethal injection being too merciful for him. He should have been fried, hung, boiled in oil or stoned to death.

I'm not sure justice was served with the girlfriend getting off scotfree but the author was completely positive she had nothing to do with the murders or he would never have taken the case. I would have liked to have seen her sweat it out in prison for 5 years simply for that fact that she had to have known her sleazy boyfriend hideously butchered them. It sure didn't bother her as they were taking laughing nude pictures with Mac's camera onboard as if they were only on a fun filled vacation. She had to have known when they disappeared & they stole their yacht that the couple had been murdered. And since there was nobody else on the island, of course it was her derelict boyfriend that had committed the murders. The book was a compelling read though & I recommend it highly!

Summary of And the Sea Will Tell

"Grips you by the throat from beginning to end."?Cleveland Plain Dealer

ALONE WITH HER NEW HUSBAND on a tiny Pacific atoll, a young woman, combing the beach, finds an odd aluminum container washed up out of the lagoon, and beside it on the sand something glitters: a gold tooth in a scorched human skull. The investigation that follows uncovers an extraordinarily complex and puzzling true-crime story. Only Vincent Bugliosi, who recounted his successful prosecution of mass murderer Charles Manson in the bestseller Helter Skelter, was able to draw together the hundreds of conflicting details of the mystery and reconstruct what really happened when four people found hell in a tropical paradise. And the Sea Will Tell reconstructs the events and subsequent trial of a riveting true murder mystery, and probes into the dark heart of a serpentine scenario of death.
And the Sea Will Tell spins a riveting story--a story that could have been the backbone for a classic novel by Herman Melville or Joseph Conrad. Two couples--one wealthy and married, the other an ex-con and his hippie girlfriend-- separately set sail for a remote South Pacific island, each hoping to play "Adam and Eve" in paradise. Instead of getting away from it all, they take it with them-- their pasts and prejudices, and the petty battles over status and material goods that arise from their different social classes. Only two people out of the original four live through the experience. One of them has the extraordinary good luck to be defended in court by master attorney Vincent Bugliosi (author of Helter Skelter). As the Los Angeles Times writes, "The book succeeds on all counts. The final pages are some of the most suspenseful in trial literature."
