SPOILERS AHEAD
I really liked this book a lot. And the event we all saw coming happened. I have read many reviews in which people say it was "icky," "creepy," etc. I didn't mind. If they were actually related I would have minded. If they were raised together as brother and sister I would have probably minded. They were two children who were forced to survive on their own while each of their parents ignored them. I wouldn't exactly call it a family environment. (But I am stretching it a bit...maybe?). Anyway, I didn't mind that you know what happened. I think it could have been eased into better, instead of just-BAM! Take that! I needed a little psychological cushion. Not just open declarations to strangers that the two were not related (side note: I think they belong together and I wanted them to have a happy ending. So there).
This book also had a more darker mystery: with kidnapping of young boys, torture, rape and murder (I think the trauma of it all sorta propelled our heroine and hero together <----the ones who are not brother and sister. I am saying this with a hint of exasperation in my voice). I liked the change in tone with the crime aspect. Sometimes you wanna be completely disgusted and creeped out (it is my American sensibilities).
What I really like about Harris is that she is not afraid to beat up her characters. Give them nasty gashes in the head, some big ol' bruises and broken bones. I think Sookie in Harris' Southern Vampire series has been injured in almost every book. I find that many authors are afraid to hurt/maim their main character. She/he needs to stay pretty and perfectly functional. Authors are afraid to have emotional damaged characters too. I know they try to give their heroines/heroes scars, but it seems as if they either don't know how to handle it, or they just don't have the balls to take it as far as it should go. I think that Harris gives her characters a nice tortured background, and you see how it affects the character, but it doesn't completely overwhelm the story. It is a good balance.
Rating: 9/10
I really like this series. I would recommended it to Harris fans and mystery fans. If you are squeamish about relationships between non-related "siblings," avoid.
