Book Reviews of American Civil War Railroad Tactics (Elite)

Book Review: Good introduction to a largely unknown subject
Summary: 5 Stars

Use of railroads in the American Civil War (and war in general) is an area which has been largely ignored for quite some time with the exception of the occasional broad-brush treatment as a strategic mover of troops and supplies. Luckily this situation has started to be rectified in the last few years and this book is an nice little introduction to the subject. The back-and-forth destruction and repair of tracks, the tactical use of rail vehicles in combat (armored trains and railroad batteries), scouting via rail, transportation of amphibious raiding forces by rail, and hospital trains are just some of the areas covered in this book.

Of course books in this Osprey series are limited to 64 pages, and some complain about that, but I think there is good balance shown in introducing and illustrating a nice cross section of the subject. I would also recommend Mars Gets New Chariots: The Iron Horse in Combat, 1861-65 by Lt. Col. Alan R. Koenig, and this book makes an excellent companion to it, as it illustrates some of the tactical uses discussed there.

Summary of American Civil War Railroad Tactics (Elite)

Osprey's study of the battles fought on America's railroads during the Civil War 91861-1865). The American Civil War was the world's first full-blown 'railroad war'. The well-developed network in the North was of great importance in serving the Union army's logistic needs over long distances, and the sparser resources of the South were proportionately even more important. Both sides invested great efforts in raiding and wrecking enemy railroads and defending and repairing their own, and battles often revolved around strategic rail junctions. Robert Hodges reveals the thrilling chases and pitched battles that made the railroad so dangerous and resulted in a surprisingly high casualty rate. He describes the equipment and tactics used by both sides and the vital supporting elements - maintenance works, telegraph lines, fuel and water supplies, as well as garrisoned blockhouses to protect key points. Full-color illustrations bring the fast-paced action to life in this fascinating read; a must-have volume for both rail and Civil War enthusiasts.
