Book Reviews of American Casino Guide - 2010 Edition

Book Review: B E S T......B E T.....B E F O R E.....G O I N G.....T O....A N Y...U .S.......C A S I N O...!
Summary: 5 Stars

This wonderful, trade-paperback sized book, "AMERICAN CASINO GUIDE", bt Steve Bourie, comes out every year. It has descriptions
of not only casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Atlantic City, New Jersey -- but also of just about every other casino, (including river-boat casinos and cruise based casinos), to be found in the entire USA! Before the main section, there are descriptions of all the major casino games, (it is here where I learnt why I got back only $3, on a win, playing roulette in an Atlantic City land-based Casino, when, (whilst practicing in an online, "for-fun" casino), playing the exact same bet, the exact same way, I got back $4 on a win! -- something which was, you can imagine, quite disquieting, to say the least, until I learnt WHY this was happening!). All the major table games -- as well as slot machines -- have their own chapters, in which is discussed not only how to play the games, but also valuable tips on winning. (With all the other info in this book, I'd suggest getting this book first, before ANY other "how-to-play-casino-games" book, as you MIGHT just learn all you need to know about playing your favourite game, (and/or finding which game IS your favourite, and why), just from this one book! Besides the front chapters on each game, there are also front chapters on: 'Your Best Casino Bets', (Parts I and II), 'Casino Comps'. 'Slot Tournaments', 'Slot Machine Trends - 2010;, 'Two Video Poker Fallacies', and an interesting chapter, (by Bob Dancer), on 'Becoming A Professional Video Poker Player', (fraught with danger -- watch your step!!!!)
The last chapter in the front section is a wise and cautionary, 'A Few Last Words', by Steve Bourie, on the subject of gambling addiction, how to detect it, (20 questions), and several places where to get help. (The wisest words I ever read about how to manage money in a casino were written by another great gaming expert, Frank Scoblete: 1) Set a loss limit, 2) Set a win limit, 3) Take at least 20 x your average bet with you to a casino 4) Get a LOT of rest before you start gambling. Use this advice -- together with the excellent advice given in this book's, "A Few Last Words", by Steve Bourie, and you'll always come out a winner.
(NOT a million-dollar winner, but a winner of SOME money, nonetheless. And, I might add -- don't forget to share some of your winnings with the hard-working casino personell!)

The bulk of this book is about information on the myriad of casinos within the USA. It's good to get a new edition of this book every year -- or at least every two years -- because cssinos go in and out of business, and because telephone numbers, and rules within casinos, often change. (For example, the beautiful little "Sands" Hotel/Casino in Atlantic City was demolished some while back, :_( , and the casinos in Colorado now allow not only the "new" games of roulette and dice, (craps) -- but have raised the betting limits on ALL games from $1-$5, to $5-$100! It is definitely worth any player's while to stay up-to-date and informed about such matters!

A typical chapter in the second part of the book starts with a map of the state being discussed, (with gaming areas highlighted by numbers -- 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), a brief description of that state's gaming history, a short discussion of that particular state's casino gambling laws, soecial casino transportation and information sources, (if any), special features and attractions in each casino, (if any), a list of the ALL the games played in ALL casinos in that particular state, (additional games are listed with each casino's description), and a survey-chart on the payback of various slot machines, listed by location and machine
denomination, (1 cent - $25, or whatever is available) -- HIGHLIGHTING IN BOLDFACE WHERE THE BIGGEST PAYOUTS ARE TO BE FOUND! ((Slot machines, however, are NOT MY own favourite games -- there are SO many of them in any typical casino, that it's not hard to realize that SLOT MACHINES are where most casinos make their most money! MY OWN advice, here, for what it may be worth, is: -- play the table games first -- THEN, if you do make any money, earmark PART of your winnings, (say, 20%), for slot play. And -- as with any casino game -- set win and loss limits...AND STOP WHILST YOU ARE AHEAD!!!!! ))

A typical entry in THE AMERICAN CASINO GUIDE, 2010, looks like this:

INDIANA:

(Within the full-page introduction are the following words: "In June, 1993, Indiana became the sixth state to legalize riverboat gambling. All of the state's riverboat casinos offer dockside gambling and, unless noted, are open 24 hours. The minium gambling age is 21." Also included in the intrudiction is the following: "...Unless otherwise noted, all casinos offer blackjack, craps, roulette, slots, video poker, video keno and Caribbean stud poker. Oprional games include baccarat (B), mini-baccarat (MB), poker, (P), pai gow poker (PGP), three-card poker, (TCP), four-card poker (FCP), Spanish 21 (S21), big-six wheel, (B6), and let it ride, (LIR),

On the next page, is a beautiful, 1/3 page picture of another Indiana casino, which is captioned: "The 5,000 Passenger 'Horseshoe
Indiana' is the world's largest riverboat casino."

Photographs of various casinos, with informative captions, appear at irregular intervals in this book, so enticingly! I wish there were more! In the NEVADA chapter are boxes, with five 1/3 page boxes highlighting different "Free Things To Do In Las Vegas!", a full-page entitled: "The Best Las Vegas Values", (by H. Scot Krause), and, a few pages away, another full-page, highlighted article, (actually, it is TWO pages long), also by Mr. Krause, entiled: "More FREE Things To See In Las Vegas".

The sections on Nevada and New Jersey not only have state maps, but also maps of the individual casino arears.

If you DO actually GO to the various casinos, (and not just use this book for information in planning a trip sometime in the future), you will be able to find pink-rimmed COUPONS, for various casinos here -- hopefully, some for casinos you will actually visit. Not every casino in the book has a coupon offer, and many of the offers are disappointly minimal, (such as a $10 blackjack match play, offered by one of the casinos) -- but if one plays blackjack, I gues this is OK! Free-buffet item with buffet purchase, 2-for-1 menu item, etc., are also the type of coupon found here, (hopefully for a casino you will visit!) Just preceeding these casino coupons, is a section of other, plain black and white coupons, for things like rental cars. and bookshops specializing in gambling books. In front of the "coupon section", is a pop-out, plasticized, "American Casino Guide Discount Card", which MUST be presented whenever redeeming a coupon. There is a place for your signature on the back, as well. This "Discount Card" shows that you have actually bought this book, and prevents things like you using the coupons for Las Vegas casinos, whilst giving others to friends who visit Florida casinos. ((They really SHOULD buy their own editions of this book -- it's NOT that expensive, and, with the game-teachiing section in the front, the casinos-and-their-features section in the middle, and the casino coupon section in the back, it's quite a nice little bargain! Honesty amongst gamers and gamblers is important too, I think, so that the false and reputation-besmirching stereotypes of professional gamers/gamblers, ("gamers" are gamblers who practice their chosen games incessantly -- to try to take the "gamble" OUT of gambling) -- or even semi-pros -- can be seen for what they actually are. FALSE! As are all stereotypes....)) The plastistized "Discount Card" in this book, expires on 12/31/2010. as most of the coupons in this book. Then, if you want more coupons for further visits to casinos and other gaming/gambling venues, just buy the newer, 2011 version, when it comes out -- which, the last page of this 2010 edition announces, will be on November 1st, 2010!

A full index, towards the back of the book, completes this indispensible guide.

In my mind, gambling/gaming is NOT an end in itself. It is simply one more venue to help "make one's fortune", so that money can, eventually, be invested in other, more important things: food, clothing, shelter, education, and the rest. In New York, they have a slogan for off-track betting, which, I think, can be used for ANY inmvestment endeavour, (including gaming/gambling, the stock market, jewellery, coins.....or anything else one invests in.) It is: 'BET WITH YOUR HEAD -- NOT OVER IT." This marvellous little annually-published treasure-book, which can easily be held in one hand, is definitely a "buy" for anyone interested in investing time, money and effort in casino gaming/gambing. Investing in THIS book is a "sure win"! There is NO gamble in buying it, at all!
