Book Reviews of Alton Brown's Gear for Your KitchenBook Review: Best Book to Own... especially if you are moving Summary: 5 Stars
Alton Brown's Gear for Your Kitchen is a GREAT book... if you are that kind of person. I am a huge AB fan and love his work. I am also concerned with buying kitchen tools and appliances that work well but do not cost me an arm or a leg. Alton takes this to task an tells you what you need and what you don't, what is important and what is not. It is really Alton Brown's product reviews, except he goes into what is required of the product to be great in the first place. Also, do not be fooled by all the kitchen gear talk, it is full of recipes too. I recently moved into a house (finally! My own kitchen!)and have constantly used this book to determine the things I need, such as cookware, kitchen electrics and small tools such as peelers and tongs (yes he goes that in depth) If you or the person you are buying this for enjoys cooking and is look for guide that will be useable for just about everything in and relating to your kitchen, this is the best place to start!
Book Review: Invaluable resource for the budding Home Chef Summary: 5 Stars
Alton brown is pretty much the only reason I watch the Food Network anymore. He's got a great attitude toward cooking and it certainly comes through in this book. Much like an episode of Good Eats, after finishing this book I actually feel like I learned something about the art and science of cooking, and the tools to do it, not just the list of ingredients in a recipe. The previous reviewers who complained about expensive recommendations, like the F. dick Multicut steel are missing the point. Alton didn't set out to make a book on outfitting your kitchen as cheap as possible. His recurring theme is spend wisely on core equipment where quality matters (Chefs knife, Heavy bottom Saute pan, etc), avoid expensive uni-taskers, and use cheaper alternatives where you can ($4 putty knife in place of a $30 gourmet "Board Scraper") I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to clean out the kitchen cabinets and get properly outfitted for some serious cooking.
Book Review: Comprehensive, thoughful book. Summary: 4 Stars
Outstanding book. A must for cooking enthusiasts. Beware of spending a lot of money on buying stuff though.
Book Review: Hardcover Infomercial Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this book in the hope of obtaining straight forward technical information regarding kitchen tools. There is quite a bit of technical information, but I do question the intent behind it. For example, he writes about how good Shun knives are. When I searched these, I found they pay him to advertise for them. They even have a line of knives named after him and he does a video advertising them. (He also recommends in that video storing them in a knife block, conveniently sold by the manufacturer, despite advising against it in this book!) The point is, I am unsure if the information he gives in the book is primarily in order to instruct or simply to sell that which is he paid to endorse. I didn't see anywhere in the book that he discloses these relationships with manufacturers, either. The closest I could find was his recommendation to research 'Consumer Reports' and 'Cook's Illustrated' because they "don't accept advertising." He then says "don't fall for marketing ploys." Good advice! I think that's essentially what this book is. Very disappointing.
