Book Review: Saved My Life
Summary: 5 Stars
This book helped save my life. The message is powerful and convincing. I had difficulty with the God-thing at first because I have been agnostic since I was a teenager. I thought I would have to convert to a congregation of snake-handlers who foamed at the mouth while gyrating to the sermons of a preacher with a haircut as bad as Trent Lott's. Someone explained to me that all I had to do was believe that there were forces greater than myself - so I chose my meager understanding of quantum mechanics.
I agree that there are some cult-like aspects to AA as it is practiced by some; however, some of the negative reviews seem to be shooting the messenger. Yes, I have seen AA myrmidons who make me extremely uncomfortable. So what? I have also seen tattoo bespangled Harley-Davidson morons, but that does not mean you cannot appreciate motorcycles. I have been to concerts where kids have more ironmongery in their faces than the whole U.S. Navy, but I still manage to enjoy the show. Similarly, I don't believe there is a heavily-muscled, grey-bearded Charlton Heston in the sky, but I can still get a wonderful message from this wonderful book.
If there is any part of this book or the overall program that makes you uncomfortable, check it out a bit more and see if there isn't something that you can benefit from. Don't be scared-away by the God-concept. My sponsor is also agnostic, and recently I found a meeting near Daytona called, "We Agnostics."
On a stylistic note: Bill W.'s writing skills are superb and I don't think he gets enough credit for his truly dazzling talent. There are several gorgeous passages of purple prose which rival anything written by Proust or Nabokov.
