Book Reviews of After the Dark (Dark Angel, Book 3)Book Review: The series Finishes Here Summary: 5 Stars
As a Dark Angel fan, I'm rating "Skin Game" and "After the Dawn", at the least from the perspective that both books tie up the loose ends of the series, giving a good sense of finality that "Freak Nation" didn't.
Where "Skin Game" tied up the Terminal City/anti-transgenic issue, "After the Dawn" ties up the breeding cult, Ames White, the Coming, and the question of what Max was designed to be. A fan should not pass up getting these issues resolved.
On the negative side, the author is incorrect on a few minor points, but I simply overlooked them and enjoyed the story. Firstly, at the conclusion of "Freak Nation", it had been established that Logan had the use of his legs (after the transfusion from Joshua) and was using the exoskeleton for a fighting edge (as shown well during the siege at Jam Pony). The books both indicated that he was still paralysed. Secondly, that they all hated Lydecker. When Lydecker disappeared mid-season-2, they were all on good-working-together terms. But as I said, I didn't hold this against the books. I just felt like doing some creative editing on the book...
In all, I am glad I finally bought these books, and have a sense of closure a sadly prematurely terminated series didn't leave me with.
Book Review: Does a Little Justice, But Not What I Expected Summary: 5 Stars
It takes only a true literary genuis to give fans what they want and to give Dark Angel the justice that it deserves. I am not saying that Mr. Collins did this, but I am not saying that he did not do this. All the fans wanted, or at least I wanted , is to see the Max/Logan problem figured out, and to see what was going to happen to the trasgenics and what about the ruins? It was hard to say that the book really did it justice I mean the Max/Logan answer did a little justice but not very much. The ruins were rarely mentioned except for at the end which was completely confusing! The only thing that I think was given proper justice in this book was the whole transgenic dealio. I am not saying that this book was horrible I mean sure it tied up most of the loose ends, but what about all of the other problems that came up in season 2. I would definetly buy this book, but agreeing with other reviewers I think that it does not have the answers that I wanted, and I will read fanfics and write fanfics to give true justice to the thing that is Dark Angel.
Book Review: True to the characters Summary: 5 Stars
Anyone who is an "Alec" fan in the DARK ANGEL universe will enjoy AFTER THE DARK (and SKIN GAME as well). The handsome, wise-cracking X5-494 plays a big role in both stories, and Max Allan Collins has the character depicted perfectly right down to Alec's speech cadence, humor, sly motives, and flawed heroic ways. Throughout the books Alec is both 452's biggest supporter and biggest critic, as well as her right-hand man and loyal, albeit at times annoying, "brother."And, in the end, he's a true hero. Oh, the rest of the characters in ATD are fine as well, and the plot brings the saga of DA to a satisfying open-ended conclusion (and yes, I realize that's an oxymoron).
Book Review: A cracking read!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have to admit to having high hopes for the last episode of the second series. I knew it was the last ever episode and hoped they would tie it up nicely, I was bitterly disappointed (apparently Fox can't see a good thing if it hit them between the eyes). Thankfully 'skin game' and 'after the dark' have tied things up, while leaving things open for more. Collins is an excellent writer, and captures the feel and humour of the series with ease. The author works well with Joshua, giving us a less niave more mature transgenic.
Book Review: ... Awsome! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay this sum's up the Dark angel series in probably the best way possible (apart from the actual show not being cancelled that is). It answers pretty much ever question there is (although Collin's does leave a few open doors incase he wanted to write another book); and even manages to have a nice twist at the end. I HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS BOOK FOR ALL DARK ANGEL FANS!!! (However, make sure you read "Skin Game" before you read this book or you wont know what is going on). Awsome book!!!
