Book Reviews of Affinity

Book Review: It IS an erotic novel!
Summary: 5 Stars

I notice one of the reviewers here said this is not an erotic novel. In fact, it's more erotic than a novel that actually involves graphic sexual actions or thoughts. What a fabulous storyteller is Sarah Waters. I've read every one I can get my hands on, and can't wait to read her latest. She's right up there in my pantheon of Great Women Writers/Literary Goddesses - Joyce Carol Oates, Toni Morrison...wow. I get lost in her wor(l)ds.

Book Review: Unbelievable
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first started reading, I wasn't sure how I would enjoy it. The progression was a little slow at first; but the by the middle, I was completely captivated in Waters' world. The foreshadowing is placed so excellently, and the characters so real, as to make the book quite wonderful. The ending actually made me cry; which I never do. I still don't know whether I want to scream at it or just cry more.

Book Review: Great modern twist on a tradition Victoria melodrama
Summary: 5 Stars

As an English major, my favorite literature was often novels like "Middlemarch" or anything by Jane Austen. Sarah Walters creates a wonderfully traditional Victorian melodrama/thriller with a more candid modern description of the sexual undercurrents of her characters. I greatly enjoyed this novel and the complicated psychology that motivates her characters.

Book Review: Haunting.
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't think I will say too much, except that this book has touched me in a place where nothing else has. I was enthralled right from the beginning. Sarah Waters writing is so, so beautiful. Every single word was written with care.

When I got the the end, I was struck with pain. It's very, very powerful and has stayed with me ever since.

Book Review: Page turner
Summary: 5 Stars

I couldn't stop reading this and stayed up until 1:00 AM to finish it. It was really compelling. The Victorian gothic atmosphere was well done; it could have been cliched but it wasn't. I was haunted by the story afterward. I give it a high recommendation.
