Book Reviews of AffinityBook Review: Compelling read, amazing twists Summary: 5 Stars
Sarah Waters is trully gifted. Affinity is written in the form of the heroine's diary. But it's far from what other authors have done in their novels, this one is trully unique. It is unique because because the characteristics of the times are written with realism and attention to detail, and the characters are depicted with well thought-of depth and wit. It is unique because the intensity of the emotions make your heart race like crazy. And finally, it would take one clever writer to come up with such unexpected twists. I finished this novel shocked, disturbed, and kept thinking about it for the rest of the day. It doesn't happen everyday that a story has such a powerful impact. I can't wait to start reading Tipping the Velvet.
Book Review: Spirtual Snake Pit Summary: 5 Stars
The first two thirds of Affinity reminded a great deal of The Snake Pit by Mary Jane Ward, a novel from the point of view of a woman in a sanitarium recovering from a nervous breakdown. But by the middle of second act, as Margaret Prior researches mysticism, the blandness of her life and the lives of the inmates begins to reveal pent up emtions. Under the guise of communion with the "spirits" Affinity spirals into a story filled with sexual tension, intrigue and madness. I was so caught up in Margaret's emotions that I completely missed Selena's devious playing of all the people in her life to ultimately win her freedom and prove in the process that she really did deserve her sentence in Millbank!
Book Review: It is all about Affinity! Summary: 5 Stars
...and it is indeed! Ms Waters' erudition surpasses anything I have ever imagined. I have seen the adaptation of this great work on DVD, and I must say that in unison with the book, Affinity leaves one completely exhausted, haunted, and with a heart full of emotions one cannot describe sometimes. Someone already wrote that unless you are looking for an erotic novel(this is not in the least), Affinity will give you a lot more than just the physical closeness between two women, it is about love, it is about longing, it is about trying to find your own identity, your own affinity.
This is a definite "must" read!
Book Review: Highly recommended Summary: 5 Stars
"Affinity" is a wonderfully atmospheric novel, set amongst the dank prisons and fog shrouded streets of Victorian London. It is much more than that, though: it is a feminist tale with lesbian undertones, a thriller, and a supernatural shocker with a twist ending that delightfully turns on its ear endings like "The Sixth Sense" and "The Others". (I read this for a book club, and NO ONE was expecting that ending.) There is a pathos to these characters lives -- it was not easy to be a woman in such a repressive society, especially a spirited one.Highly recommended... there's something for everyone in this one.
Book Review: My summer read (2006) Summary: 5 Stars
This story is so very intriguing that I felt like I was right there in Millbank prison with Selina Dawes. Sarah Waters' description of how horrid a Victorian 'gaol' actually was is chilling and yet when you really think on it, it was probably even more terrible than that. I can only imagine what it was like to totally 'lose it' and be meanly shuffled off to 'the darks' bound in a Victorian version of the straight jacket. Also the supernatural factor of this story is amazing and one gets a taste of Peter Quick. What a great taste it is. This book is a MUST if you enjoyed The Alienist by Caleb Carr.
