Book Review: Beyond Mere Photoshop Skills

Having developed a foundational knowledge of Photoshop and completed several tutorials and books, I felt I was ready for a challenge. To top it off, I wanted a book that went past how to do a project to why certain choices were being made. I decided to try Advanced Adobe Photoshop CS3 Revealed, and I definitely got the most for my time with this guide. Essentially, I got design class caliber instruction, including skill building and design philosophy, without the hassle of attending an actual class.
The design of the book itself was one of things that made my experience so positive. Each of the book's 10 chapters, which cover over-arching design topics like "Working with Layers" or "Creating Special Effects," are divided into several lessons that explore specific areas of that topic, such as "Using a Single Layer Mask with Multiple Layers" or "Creating a Ripped Effect."
The author goes out of his way to make the concepts concrete and real-world applicable. Each lesson begins with a "What You'll Do" section that explains the goals for learning this particular skill. The author's tone was particularly conversational and engaging. Often, he explains that the lesson was based on a real world project he did as a designer and because he also made several stops and starts before he developed the best method, he will be taking the learners though that process. I found it extremely helpful to see firsthand not only what worked and what didn't, but why.
The chunking and layout of information within each lesson also contributed to my ability to follow and retain processes. The step by step prompts instructions are found on the outside third of the page with the inner two-thirds reserved for images with which to compare my work. The frequent visual checkpoints made it easy to make sure I was on the right track. The instruction contains Author Notes in which Botello imparts tips and tricks of the trade, as well as or Photoshop history. The way the instruction is written ensures that the knowledge is being encoded in long-term memory. At the beginning of a chapter, processes are explained clearly and thoroughly, when the those same skills are used in other lessons or in future chapters, the instruction becomes more and more simple to the point of simply directing me to perform an action.
To test retention, each chapter ends with Project Builders. These mini-projects are designed to use the cumulative skills learned in that chapter and those previous. The level of instruction is minimal, relying on me to recall previous learning or go back and review. These sections provided a great gut check for how much I was really taking away from chapters that sometimes took me several days to complete. I walked away from this experience feeling confident in my ability to manipulate paths, layer masks, adjustment layers, filters, layer styles, blending modes, and much more.
While all of the projects in the book weren't directly applicable to my personal design needs, in addition to improved Photoshop skills, I gained a higher level understanding of "design." Botello took the time to point out the kinds of complex texture and depth in an image that create visual interest and the kinds of flaws or inaccuracies draw the viewer's gaze in a negative way. I'm able to evaluate a graphic in a way I wasn't able to before, and I've become much more conscious of how simple tweaks like shadow, highlight, texture, and color curves and hue can improve the quality of an image.
Different titles in the Revealed series are written by different authors, and from reviews I read during my research prior to buying the book, I'm not sure if the other authors bring their software to life quite as well as Botello has. However, if you're ready to take your Photoshop skills and design sensibilities to a completely new level, this book is a must. Even if you're not sure you're an "advanced" user, this author will take your hand and pull up to his level, one step at a time.
