I have read more than one would consider a healthy amount of survival/adventure books in the past year. Some I found to be very rewarding while others simply mindless entertainment. I bought Adrift, along with seven other titles in the same genre, on a rather dreary day last winter after deciding to shelf the Television. Of all of my new stash, titles any adventure enthusiast would recognize, Adrift was placed at the bottom of the pile. I would like to blame this on the books cover, for it looked to be the least "Adventurous" to me; at least compared to the other's that now adorned my nightstand demanding attention. Maybe, on some subconscious level, I recognized the poor protagonist was going to spend the better part of the book alone, a terrifying prospect for both of us. For him because he was going to be, well, alone; for me because there would be little, to no, dialog. Frightening.
One by one I finished off the other books until only one remained on the nightstand; Adrift. Like an accusation it watched from its perch for several days while I contemplated its fate. I even considered turning on the T.V. Maybe I hadn't missed too much of the new Survivor series? Finally, a week later, and only after showing clear signs of "Lack of Survival Book Reading Withdrawal", I conceded and began reading Adrift. And, then, a wonderful thing happened; I couldn't put it down. I guess the moral of the story is obvious; never judge a book by its cover.
