Book Reviews of Adobe Photoshop CS2 Studio Techniques

Book Review: Great Book - Very Comprehensive
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an excellent book that covers the majority of what Photoshop can do. As can be expected with a program this complex, the book is not able to cover every tool or go into great detail about each. However, in the important areas, this book is excellent. The explanations and examples provided for utilizing curves and layers are nothing short of brilliant as are the chapters on masks and color correction. There is also a chapter on overall workflow that shows the reader how to integrate all their new found knowledge. The author also earns kudos for the book's particular focus on photograph manipulation.

Overall, this book is a fantastic value and I highly recommended it to anyone wishing to learn this great program. This could be the only book you ever need but, depending on one's needs, another book focusing on a particular area will probably be required (retouching/restoration, etc). Photoshop CS2 Studio Techniques provides the optimal foundation book to begin your endeavor.

Book Review: Ben Willmore's slant on Photoshop is refreshing!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ben Willmore has a fresh approach to Photoshop and his creative ideas help you be more creative in your work too. I have for years devoured the pages of photoshop books written by Deke McClelland and Scott Kelby and enjoyed them tremendously. I find that Ben Willmore's approach is quite different and has helped me understand some of Photoshop's features in a new light. If you want to know why you are taking certain steps in working on a problem image, and not just what steps should be taken, then this is the book for you. Whether you want to simply enhance photos or create an artistic masterpiece, you will find the help you need in this book.

Book Review: Good Blend of General Information and Step by Step Instruction
Summary: 5 Stars

Of the 3 new books I own on Photoshop CS2, this is the book I reach for most often.

The author goes into enough detail about each technique to allow the reader get oriented and imagine using it in his/her own work. But it is not too wordy. The forest can still be scene for the trees.

The step by step instructions are not too closely tied to specific example photos so it is possible to go through the steps for the first time on one's own pictures.

Great coverage of masking and selection techniques critical to professional level use of photoshop.

Book Review: Excellent Second Book on Photoshop
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're starting from absolutely scratch, I recommend you begin with Deke McClelland's Photoshop One-On-One. However, that will only whet your appetite and he gives a broad overview; this book explores various areas in more detail which reinforces what you've learned on a macro level with Deke.

The whole subject of Photoshop is vast and exhausting. This book requires effort and perseverence but they will be rewarded with a much greater faciity with Photoshop, something that is its own reward if it turns out that you enjoy photography and image enhancement.

Book Review: Great Book for Experienced Photoshop Users
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm pretty experienced in Photoshop and this book has helped me to really understand how Photoshop works. I especially appreciated his great chapter on Curves. He breaks it down and really explains how Curves works in a way that is easy to understand. Personally I used step-by-step tutorial-type books when I was first learning Photoshop and that worked well for me as a beginner. I'm not sure I'd want to start with this book as a beginner. But at an experienced level it is helping me increase my knowledge and understanding of Photoshop tremendously.
