Book Reviews of Acheron (Dark-Hunter, Book 12)Book Review: Best book of the whole series! Summary: 5 Stars
I must start by saying that I'm biased. Acheron is the best character from all Ms. Kenyon's books. I've read it several times and I'll probably read it again soon (well, maybe not Part I, but definitely Part II). The horrors and tortures Ash experiences are... I realize it's just a story, but it was devastating, it makes you want to just hold him and take away all his memories. [However, if not for everything Ash went through, he wouldn't be the man/god he became.] Characters in the books try and do that, but clearly, (until he meets his Tory) they either didn't know how to offer comfort nor did they understand just what Ash went through and how he could get over it.
I hate Artemis. I didn't like her after reading the other books, I hated her after reading Dark Side of the Moon, but after this, if I never read about Artemis again it'll be too soon. Like Ash's life wasn't bad enough, he had enough darkness, misery and torment without Artemis in his life, but every time she comes into the picture, his life suddenly gets worse. And I'm going to stop now, I honestly can't stand Artemis anymore, I despise her.
I know I said it before but Ash is my most favorite character. I've read most of the other Dark-hunter novels (I even bought Fury's story, although part of that purchase was because JR Ward contributed a story as well, Ash is the best in this series, but the BDB will always hold a special place in my heart). I think Kenyon does an outstanding job with not only Ash's background, but how he grows up, what he becomes, how he discovers his powers, and how he stays "human." Actually Ash remains more human than many people I know. Tory's character points out the exact thing I noticed (throughout all the DH stories): Ash retains and shares his compassion for all beings, even through all the horrors he went through. The fact that he can still show any emotion is amazing. An 11,000 year old slave that's been abused, brutalized and tortured countless times by humans and gods and he still can care, love, and take care of others. This is why I love Ash. He didn't give up on humanity, he may have given up hope on the gods, but not on humanity. He understands how much humans are given and how much we take for granted most of the time. This book also shows that even after all this time and everything he's been through, he can still fall in love, he still has weaknesses and he still has that basic human need of wanting to be accepted for who and what you are. He finds the one person willing to not only look past his facade, but she reaches deep inside and touches his heart and sees the man/lover that he can be. Of course, it wouldn't be a romance novel if Ash didn't get his HEA, so it makes sense that he does, and I think that Tory is plenty strong enough to compliment Ash. Not to mention the fact that there are enough coincidences and connecting characters between Tory and other characters around her (I mean she lives in New Orleans, if you've read some of the other books that should tell you the people she knows).
I don't want to give away too much more for those who haven't read this book, but you know that if Ash has an HEA, then that can't include Artemis in his future. I love what Tory does and how it's done. Not only does this book show Ash in all his glory, but Tory is more than woman enough as a character in this story. This book also shows how much Ash is appreciated by his Dark-hunters and how much he is loved by his mother. My only hope for future DH novels is that Artemis stays out of them, and if she comes back at all, Tory takes care of it.
