Book Reviews of Academ's Fury (Codex Alera)Book Review: Excellent !! Summary: 5 Stars
- Butcher starts to reveal the depth of his characters and it creates an excellent tension for readers so we can really develop a love affair with the heroes and villains (which definitely arent cut and dry) of Alera. While traditional fantasy novels might usually dabble in political intrigue, the Codex Alera puts it at the forefront. Being able to reflect on all four books, each tends to be a coming of age novel, as there are basically two years between each novel and we get to see Tavi engage in quite incredible situations.
- Academ's reveals the Vord, which is a very sci-fi departure from the first novel, which is, character-wise, rather traditional in its introductory tone. They are a mythical enemy to the Alerans' enemy, the Marat. But, aside from battling a legendary foe, Academ's focuses on political situations and displays its characters to have multiple dimensions. We saw a little bit of that in Fidelias in Furies of Calderon, but it doesn't start to show until this novel and further increases greatly in Cursor's and Captain's Fury - making these books unbelievably addictive. Go get them now!
Book Review: Hooked on the series Summary: 5 Stars
The first book was good (I even paid full price for it), so I bought the second (another full price). The second was even better than the first. The characters are familiar now and the story becoming more interesting.
My only complaint would be for such a young man, Tavi always has the right answer to complex situations. This is fantasy, however. It looks like I will be buying book three now.
It is good to find a new series. I just hope it does not drag on forever, like some that become popular. There should be a stopping point.
Book Review: Makes me eager for the 3rd book!! Summary: 5 Stars
I think the series actually go better this time. Tavi 's character has grown and become more fleshed out. I think Jim is about to unleash a suprise on us on the 3rd book concerning TAvi and I am eager to hear it.
I love his characters and I think he is a great read. I await Cursor's fury eagerly.
Book Review: Can't wait for Book 3! Summary: 5 Stars
I love Tavi! This book is as exciting as the first one. Can't wait for Book 3 to arrive...
Book Review: Good story, but the writing falls down sometimes Summary: 3 Stars
I like Jim Butcher's style of story in general, and in the Codex Alera series he builds a fantasy world that allows him to widen the scope of invention for that story telling into imaginative directions.
However, I feel compelled to point out where he falls down a bit in craft, which completely positive reviews (which I tend to agree with regarding the story and characters) don't seem to warn readers about...forewarned, it seems more likely a reader wouldn't have the appeal of the characters and overall story spoiled and instead could read past the problems I see as expected, but passing, issues.
The main problem is in a bit of weakness in dialog at certain points, where I'd guess the writer's apparent enthusiasm steps over from carrying the reader along on an exciting ride to letting ill-fitting dialog and incidents crop up in a jarring way.
As I recall, this happened first, briefly, in a climactic moment towards the end of the first book, but in this book, it crops up most strongly throughout the latter half in the dialog of the Marat chieftain. If you don't notice such, or can persuade/prepare yourself to ignore it, you'll enjoy the book a lot more, I think.
Note that I was prompted to mention this after RE-reading the series (again), and it was this specific book alone that bothered me greatly enough to comment and inform.
