Book Reviews of ACT in Practice: Case Conceptualization in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (Professional)

Book Review: A MUST read for all practioners!
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, where do I begin? Do you like to see a tried and true theory totally revised and updated to reflect the latest in evidenced-based practice? Do you like to feel like the author is speaking intimately to you instead of going on and on about his/her techniques and orientation? Do you want to learn how to apply a different approach to your current clinical ideas to help your clients who aren't responding? Do you think a person's values can motivate them? Then this is the book for you.

It's hard to put down because you quickly learn that every chapter has an intriguing new take on how to deliver psychotherapy--and every now and then you find a hilarious anecdote that not only rewards and relaxes you, but makes you think more deeply. This book is not a chore to read, it's an adventure in discovery.

I've met one of the authors and been to his presentation, but this Acceptance and Commitment Therapy needs to be studied for the student or clinician to be able to fully appreciate its principles. The behavioral stuff, for once, comes alive and is actually understandable---and better yet, is applied to verbal self-talk and private cognitive events. This book is truly a Rosetta Stone for understanding how to work with the private verbal talk that interfere with your clients' therapeutic breakthroughs. These two authors make the Third Wave of Behaviorism an interesting and exciting new frontier. They have managed to completely re-invigorate my ideas on behavioral theory and techniques, but more importantly, their work can be applied to different orientations.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in Practice is a way to conceptualize your cases and develop treatment plans that don't ignore your client's thoughts, feelings, and values. The authors have developed a book that reviews the three waves of behaviorism, places them in a model that promotes psychological flexibility, and extends the theory to a cutting edge tool for all clinicians to use in every orientation. When you are finished with the book, you are left with the desire to learn more about the topic and you are eager to try out the ideas in your practice. Reading this book also helps you understand yourself a little better and your own private verbal events, so you get more than your money's worth. I heartily recommend this book for both students and practicing clinicians.

Summary of ACT in Practice: Case Conceptualization in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (Professional)

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is more than just a set of techniques for structuring psychotherapeutic treatment; it also offers a new, insightful, transdiagnostic approach to case conceptualization and to mental health in general. Learn to put this popular new psychotherapeutic model to work in your practice with this book, the first guide that explains how to do case conceptualization within an ACT framework.

ACT in Practice offers an introduction to ACT, an overview of its impact, and a brief introduction to the six core processes of ACT treatment--the six points of the hexaflex model and its pathological alter ego, the so-called inflexahex. It describes how to accomplish case conceptualizations in general and offers précis of the literature that establish the importance and value of case conceptualization. This guide also offers possible alternative case conceptualization for cases from different therapeutic traditions, a great help to therapists who come from a more traditional CBT background. Exercises throughout help you to evaluate the information you have just learned so that you may effectively integrate ACT into your practice.
