Book Reviews of A Visitor for Bear (Bear and Mouse)

Book Review: The genesis of a most unlikely friendship
Summary: 5 Stars

A Visitor for Bear is a children's picturebook about the genesis of a most unlikely friendship. Bear is very grumpy and prefers his privacy; his "No Visitors Allowed" sign makes that clear. But then a little grey mouse comes to call - and won't take no for an answer! No matter how much Bear forbids it, the little grey mouse keeps turning up. At last Bear capitulates and agrees to spend some time with the mouse in exchange for the mouse's agreement to leave afterwards. It turns out that sharing jokes and tea with a new friend can be fun after all! A gentle story about the pleasure of meeting and becoming friendly with new people.

Book Review: a book you can enjoy with your kid
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this book for my son when he was 3 and a half, and it was an instant hit with him. Now, half a year later, it is still one of his favourites.
The story has a warm message; the illustratons are pretty and sometimes laughing-out-loud funny (those facial expressions!); the text is not hard to understand yet it definitely added new terms to his vocabulary ("vamoose", "begone", or his favourite: "for good measure"). The pictures and the interesting word choices also make this book enjoyable for parents - something that can be quite important when you have to read a book for the nth time for your child.

Book Review: Destined To Be a Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

A Visitor for Bear is the delightful and satisfying story of two fully realized characters and how they become friends. It is not only abundant with humor, but also explores the complexity of feelings that come with making friends and the risk one takes to do so. My 5-year-old daughter asks for this book frequently, and it is such a good out-loud read that I've caught my teenage sons enjoying it from the hallway outside her bedroom. It is truly a family favorite, even for this family who reads dozens of new books every month, and is destined to become a classic.

Book Review: Laugh out loud funny
Summary: 5 Stars

For synopsis see above. Bear just can't get rid of that pesky mouse. And when mouse is finally ready to go Bear can't bear to part with him.
While most kids can figure out where the mouse is hiding, I enjoy seeing their faces whenever he reappears (in my school library). The illustrations are adorable and the story begs to be read aloud which I will be doing about 28 times as this book is one of 5 nominated for the CYRM for 10-11. One of the best choices in that reading program in a while. Highly recommended for pre schoolers and elementary kids.

Book Review: Visitors Allowed
Summary: 5 Stars

Bear never had visitors, he even posted a sign: "No visitors allowed." But one day, "a small and gray" and "bright-eyed" mouse knocked on his door. Despite Bear's repeated attempts to keep the mouse out of his house, the mouse kept finding a way inside. Finally, Bear agreed to sharing a cup of tea and a "bit" of cheese with the mouse, inside his very own house. Much to his surprise and delight, Bear found comfort in the visit of the mouse. And when the mouse was ready to leave, Bear tore up his old sign, saying that friends are allowed.
