Book Review: Best JG book by far

It's a little different than his other legal thrillers, and while it was his first book it either wasn't published or was re-released after The Firm. It is a little less slick, but has a lot more character development than his later books, as well as a lot more detail. More of a labor of love than just a successful formula, if you get my drift.
The story centers around the seemingly justifiable homicide in a small southern (Mississippi) town by a black father of the rapists of his daughter. This all unfolds in about two pages, and the book never lets up much from there. When done as a film the story becomes kind of an unbelievable Hollywood circus, but in the book the process is developed in a deliberative process, and the Rube Goldberg quality of the plot maintains plausability and excitement.
Again, it is a little longer than most of his other books, and not so polished, but if you like strong and well-developed characters and especially if you already like JG, then it's hard to see how you would not love this book. Even if you are not a JG fan, give this one a try- it is really good, original southern writing.

"Cobb strung a length of quarter inch ski rope over a limb ... he grabbed her and put the noose around her head." The story is frighteningly believable and expertly crafted around a horrible crime and the tragic consequences that follow. At times, Beck's character voices can be distracting, but his efforts are generally applied to good effect, adding another level of tension to this already suspenseful look at a small Mississippi town's struggle for justice.
