Book Reviews of A Thousand Country RoadsBook Review: A Thousand Country Roads Summary: 5 Stars
A great epilogue to another great book (The Bridges of Madison County). Love all of Robert James Waller's work. I would recommend any of his books!
Book Review: Robert James Waller's books: pages of poetic prose. Summary: 4 Stars
A Thousand Country Roads doesn't disappoint because of Waller's vivid descriptions of Kincaid's natural surroundings, of his life-long memories, and of his unfulfilled dreams. How beautifully he manages to bare the soul of a lonely, aging man. It makes one wonder how many men who walk this earth fail to explore their inner needs till their dying day. Bravo to Waller for showing us that 'real men can love and real men can cry'. Just read this story for the pure enjoyment of Waller's words and expressive emotions, and forget some of the criticisms about this book. Ah, if only I could write with such majesty...and I bet a few of those critics might long for that creative skill as well.
Book Review: Great Ending Summary: 4 Stars
If you loved Bridges of Madison County this is a great story to tie everything together. Loved it!!
Book Review: Fast Forward to the Past --with Robert James Weller AGAIN Summary: 3 Stars
A Thousand Country Roads makes delightful summer reading. At 175 pages or less it is an easy read in a weekend or even a long rainy day. Fun and enjoyable, it takes us back to the Bridges of Madison County and a trip through California and other states. But most of all it takes us forward as an epilogue to the famous book that became a wonderful movie. Robert Kincaid goes back in search of his Francesca Johnson with his truck named Harry. The characters he meets make the story seem real and warm. The language ranges from downright romantic to possibly pedantic in some areas. Pass quickly through the passages that don't please you to find some that will sing with your beliefs. Summer is always a good time to look back and to begin again in some way no matter what our ages. On the road-- he discovers more about life, himself and of course love. And the author gives us another 'bridge' to a future we could not even imagine Kincaid the solo photographer having. It may inspire you to take a second look at your surroundings as you vacation into your future.
Book Review: Not What You Might Hope For Summary: 3 Stars
A Thousand Country Roads is an epilogue to The Bridges of Madison County. In my opinion, it wouldn't stand alone, but should only be read if one has read The Bridges of Madison County, loved it, and are so captivated by the characters that you would like to know more about the story of their lives. Will you feel better about the emotional happiness of the characters after reading the book? I didn't. I thought this book was just a bit too much. Too many almosts and what ifs, too many coincidences and lost chances preventing the characters from finding the happiness they desired, or that you may have wished for them.
