Book Reviews of A Talent For WarBook Review: I am the dissenter in the group Summary: 3 Stars
I am a rabid fan of Jack McDevitt and have read his books in reverse order. I read all of this latest befor reading his first publications. Maybe this is why I found "Talent for War" less enjoyable reading than "Chindi" or his others. It is certainly good writing, yet I found myself bogged down and waiting for something to happen. It struck me more as a mystery novel in a science fiction setting. If you are looking for high tech and action-packed, this is not the story for you. But, if you want a well written story that has a mystery..then you will probably enjoy this. Either way, for me, his other novels are his best--IMHO. ;-)
Book Review: Not as good as his later books. Summary: 3 Stars
I had read all of Jack McDevitt's books that came after this one. In fact, I didn't know this one existed. I really liked the characters in this particular series, so was delighted to discover this book. However, the story was really disjointed and I had to look back several times for different references to follow the plot. It was a good read except for the confusing story. I am thinking that this was one of his first books and wasn't as finely tuned as his later ones. I was glad to have the book because it explained references in the later books in the series.
Book Review: An enjoyable, quick read Summary: 3 Stars
It's a very straight forward mystery that begins a series focused on Alex Benedict. This one is from his point of view, while the two others now published (Polaris & Seeker) are from his assistant's POV, as with many mystery novels.
Alex's uncle dies and information left leads him on a hunt for what happened during a war a few centuries earlier. The back cover and my knowledge of military history pretty much gave away most of what would happen, but it was a good introduction to the universe and he gets better in later novels.
Book Review: Eh Summary: 3 Stars
Having read most of McDevitt's books and seeing good reviews of this one, I expected a lot more. The basic mystery is exceedingly drawn out, and in the end the resolution is lost in the shuffle of the tediously described travels of the main character. A good premise poorly executed. Not a bad book, but overrated and a disappointment.
Book Review: A Talent For Being A Bit Dated Summary: 3 Stars
This is the first book that I've just finished by Mr. McDevitt, and I was feeling that it's internal structure feels a bit dated. Luckily I'm reading his "Engines Of God" and that book is much better. I'm unsure if I should read the second book of this series.
