Book Reviews of A Street Through Time

Book Review: absolutely fantastic
Summary: 5 Stars

There are few publishers putting out such consistent quality nonfiction as DK and this book is just one more fine example of this. The concept--showing the same small geographic site through time from Stone Age to contemporary--is brilliant. It lets the reader see in concise, concrete fashion the historic changes wrought by technology, warfare, agriculture, etc. It brings a very abstract and thus hard to grasp idea (especially for children) down to a manageable level.
The times chosen are well-selected and include:
Stone Age--nomadic lifestyle
2000 BCE--agriculture, permanent living
Iron Age--rise of iron tools, domestication of animals
Roman times--larger polished stone structures, trade ships
600 A.D.--regression back to pre-Roman
1200s--early Medieval village, shops
1400's--the village has prospered, become a town--more trade (look for those ship rats!)
1500s--grim plague year
1600s--religious wars
1700s--
early 1800s--rise of industry and its huge impact, good and bad
late 1800s--a full-size city
Contemporary

The text is clear and concise. The illustrations are wonderfully detailed, not just pictorially but culturally as well, showing changes in religion, food, clothing, class distinctions, farming, shipping technology etc. The plague year's horror is highlighted by being the only pages done at night. Beyond the history, kids will have lots of fun (akin to Where's Waldo) looking for particular characters mentioned in the text ("can you find the woman . . . ") or just looking to see what each character is doing.

Parents who don't want to introduce their children to some of humanity's more ugly aspects (we see war, killing, setting houses on fire, etc.) or nature's (plague, bodies floating in water) may want to skip this. If you are fine with that, I can't recommend the book enough. A good marriage of text and illustration, fun and educational, details that will provide literally hours of engagement--highly recommended.

Summary of A Street Through Time

Demonstrating the unfolding of history, panoramic views visiting a particular site every few centuries follow the evolution of a Stone Age riverside settlement into a twentieth-century city. A bold title and date with a few sentences describing significant changes appears in the upper-right-hand corner of each broad vertical scene. Added statements wind around the four borders, offering details about daily life of the period and inviting readers to search for significant activities among the many small vignettes in the larger view. Tiny figures busy at daily life offer an engaging chronicle of human experience over time as invaders and disease take their toll or more peaceful times bring prosperity and growth. The hypothetical street is in an unnamed European setting; Romans, Barbarians, Vikings, and the plague alter the fortunes of in-habitants. Some of the historical milestones represented by the fourteen segments are not so far apart, while long stretches of time separate others. It's a very telescopic view, compressing the rich complexities of history into a few glimpses, but there's plenty of human interest in the passing scene to keep readers poring over the shifting yet similar pursuits of people over time. The timeline construct is a useful demonstration for children, and the busy vistas would make a fine springboard for encouraging students to create scenes of local history.
