Book Review: Beautifully evocative of a child's world

Few authors are able to fully evoke the complex world of a child with its intense joys, sorrows, jealousy and loneliness. Harper Lee comes to mind and, with this beautifully written novel, so does Kaylie Jones. We accompany the narrator, Channe Willis, through the arrival of her adopted brother, clutching his suitcase in his too-small jacket; her weekly bouts of insomnia, her stubborn encounters with school directors and, in the end, the death of her beloved father. Among the richly drawn characters, Channe's first friend, Francis Fortescue and his eccentric mother, stand out. Francis owns three string puppets, two women and a man. One of the ladies was blond, wears a pink gown with gold trim, and the other is in dark purple with silver trim and has black hair. In a conversation that is true to the fantasy play of children as well as revealing, Francis tells Channe that "Esperanza was the good one, the one in pink, and Serpentina was the evil adulteress, murderess, and home-wrecker. The little man was Don Francesco. He's kind, fragile and believes anything they tell him. He always gets stuck in the middle and someone gets killed." A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries is a quietly powerful book that wonderfully recreates the unique world of children and young adults.
