Book Reviews of A Reader's Hebrew Bible

Book Review: Great Resource...
Summary: 4 Stars

I won't restate the attractive features of this text, because the previous reviewers did a fine job covering the highlights. I will just note that, though some who examine the credentials of the text and find that its compilers are a bit more conservative than they are (they were educated at Bob Jones University) i can honestly say they did a good, fair job with the translations. For example, at Isaiah 7:14, almost all modern translations translate it "virgin" because of the corresponding Matthew quote of it (Matthew, though, was quoting the Septuagint rendering "Parthenos" and not the Hebrew "Almah"), when they cite the word at the bottom, they give the more accurate Hebrew rendering of "young woman", being that the word does not necessarily denote a virgin, nor is it suggested in the text.
The only problem i found with the text, and it may be just in my copy, but half of the words are faded significantly. This kept it from getting a full five stars. But, again, the text itself is a good resource to have for "Hebrew on the go", although it should not replace translation with a sound Lexicon, nor exegetical research. And, of course, the binding is a bit...fragile.

Book Review: Everything but the cover...
Summary: 4 Stars

This is quite an amazing product. To my knowledge, nothing like it exists. If you are a Hebrew student who spends most of the time tracking down words in a lexicon, this is the tool you need to pick up. The font is very legible and the helps are appropriate for even beginning Hebrew students. My primary concern is that the structure of the Bible needs some attention.

The binding seems fairly solid, but because I just purchased it, I have no idea how it will hold up long term. My concern is more to do with the cover. The Italian leather is nice, but the cardboard underneath it is very flimsy. It is easy to crease and it will probably break before too long and need to be rebound.

Zondervan, if you read these reviews, please address the problem and put a good cover on a great product.

Book Review: Upside-down binding
Summary: 4 Stars

I received this item in a timely manner from Amazon. The binding is lovely and I am pleased with the book's layout. Two items worth noting:

* My particular copy of this book was bound upside-down, including the marking ribbon. I called the publisher and they are sending me a free replacement, without requiring me to send back my defective product first. Good move, Zondervan.

* The publisher's website has the book's glossary (Hebrew-English) available for download as a pdf booklet, which you can then use separate from the book itself. This prevents excessive wear on the book's binding and allows you to have both open at the same time.

Book Review: Good Book, Poor Printing
Summary: 3 Stars

The concept is great. But my major complaint with this book is the printing. A very common problem is that entire words in the text are faded (this is done intentionally to indicate less frequent vocabulary -- e.g. words used in the OT less than 100 times). Since these words are printed only in a very light ghost gray, they look washed out as if there were some sort of inking problem in the printing. Perhaps this is a usefule tool to some, but I found it less than appealing. Other than that, this Hebrew Bible makes for a pleasant alternative to awkward interlinear versions.

Book Review: A Christian's take on the Old Testament
Summary: 1 Stars

Unfortunately, this translation has been prepared by a Christian scholar. Something not identified in the write up, it's not until he gives thanks to Jesus Christ and lists Bob Jones University do you realize what you have.
