Book Reviews of A Night Without Armor : PoemsBook Review: A very personal & sincere poetry collection Summary: 4 Stars
Jewel is very poetic and her lyrics just roll off the tongue. If you've never heard her sing, she has a certain twang to her song that you'll either adore or not. I personally love her singing and if you do too, you will want to get this sweet, and sometimes bittersweet collection of her simple yet memorable poems. I was inspired to make a few of my own after reading hers, and play around with words the way she does. This book is the cat's meow fans ;) Thanks for reading!
Book Review: Easy Read and Well Done! Summary: 4 Stars
Jewel does a fine job in using language which evokes imagery of rustic secrets, peaceful solitude, relationships, etc. She expresses her love of the outdoors in a spiritual way. A major strength of this group of poems is that they are easy to read and don't take a lot of "analysis" to see what they actually are, to see their true beauty. I look forward to reading more of her poems. It is obvious that she loves life very much!
Book Review: Beautiful and Creative Summary: 4 Stars
I have always been a fan of Jewel's work, and this book solidified my place as a fan. Her poetry is beautiful and filled with emotion.
Book Review: Sincere Poems Summary: 3 Stars
This 1990's collection of poems written in her teens and twenties made Jewel the best-selling living poet in the United States. Wow. That's no small achievement.
I admit I was not blown away by these poems but quite a few I liked and one or two made me pause to re-read and think over. I won't do titles in this review but there was one poem in particular about a young girl who lived a dangerous life with her risky sexual behavior, and it seemed to rise above the others in "Night" because it was stark, sanguine and harder-hitting than most of Jewel's mildly esoteric themes.
That poem generated the thought that there but for the grace of God/fate/karma/luck go so many of us.
What is most obvious to a discerning reader is that these are less the poetical works of a musical star and more the personal writings of a sincere, very young, still almost innocent human being who skipped pretension and bravely shared something meaningful. Because of that as much as because of the actual content of the poems, these worth reading.
Book Review: It has it's good points Summary: 3 Stars
I write poetry. And yes, I'm also a Jewel fan. But I read the book expecting alot worse. Jewel's preachiness can be a pain, her obbsession with her breasts, 'bones' and 'flesh' is tiresome, her tone can be whining, but, as a collection of poetry she speaks sincerely and with such empathy for others. A few highlights, 'Lover's for Lilly', 'Father of a deaf girl' 'PS:' 'Forgetful'. This book is not completely without merit. If you're interested go for it.
