Book Reviews of A Little Bit Psychic: Pride & Prejudice with a modern twist

Book Review: Sweet, enjoyable story
Summary: 5 Stars

I received this book for my birthday some months back and truly enjoyed it. I've read it several times and I've liked it each time seeing something a little different each time I do. This is a modern retelling with some "twists" that make it different from Austen's Pride and Prejudice, but yet has the misunderstandings that have become standard in romantic fiction and Miss Austen's beloved characters have entered the modern world in a believable fashion.

Elizabeth Bennet has psychic abilities she isn't totally comfortable with. She "sees" her future over and over again, but just can't seem to "believe in" everything she sees. The circular plot helps the reader understand the confusion Elizabeth suffers with as she tries to combine life with her doctorate studies.

In this tale, Darcy and Elizabeth have known each other since childhood and, as the two age, find their feelings for each other have also matured causing an embarrassing situation for the older Darcy and confusion for Elizabeth that follows her into adulthood.

At 110 pages, A Little Bit Psychic is a light and very fast read. This chronicle of Elizabeth's journey gives us a poignant look at a young woman who hides in her studies until life makes her learn to accept her abilities as well as other insecurities. This view of an intelligent woman suffering with everyday and simple problems is what makes the story so believable.

A few happenings try to throw Elizabeth (and the reader) off kilter, but only supply Lizzy Bennet with the odd life happenings that make her look at situations with some objectivity. Unfortunately, and like in Austen's classic, Elizabeth's objective deductions don't come in time to keep her from making her biggest and most foolish conclusion.

Though we know the Bennets are American, we don't know exactly where they live. The information isn't really necessary and after reading the story a second time, I imagined they lived next door to me. I don't know if this was the author's intention or not, but I found that little omission something that allowed me to make the story a little more personal. We also don't know what type of business Darcy or Mr. Bennet are in. Again, the information would be trivial, but on the first read I was curious. The second read, I imagined them working in my husband's field; the third read, my father's; then my brother's. It made the story a little different for me with each read and, again, more personal.

Like Austen's classic, A Little Bit Psychic shows us a woman with simple problems that can only be solved by living and experience. It's obvious this story is meant to be a quick read with a simple message and not an in depth vision into Austen. As a modern epic, A Little Bit Psychic automatically leaves Austen's world, but her characters are perfect for this type of message. This tome is for an adult reader as it has a couple of mature situations, but I've read it to my daughter glossing over those parts. The lesson was worth the little extra effort.

If you're after Austen, read Austen. If you're after a lot of sex, get a steamy Harlequin. If you're after intrigue, pick up a mystery. If you want a quick, fun story that doesn't go into extreme detail about trivialities, but tells a story about someone who could be real, read A Little Bit Psychic. You might just find yourself smiling.

Summary of A Little Bit Psychic: Pride & Prejudice with a modern twist

If Jane Austen lived in the 21st Century, who knows how Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet would overcome their false impressions, mistaken pride and unfounded prejudices. Here is a possible answer. -- Take a humorous journey with post-graduate student Elizabeth Bennet as she travels to London to study for her PhD. Will her strange dreams of princesses and knights hold her back or will being just "A Little Bit Psychic" aid her in discovering that William Darcy is the love of her life?
