Book Reviews of A Lifetime To Get Here: Diana Ross: The American Dreamgirl

Book Review: What a piece of junk!
Summary: 1 Stars

Of all the books I've read about Diana Ross and the Supremes this is by far the absolute worst! First of all, the continuous trashing of Ross's former singing partner, Mary Wilson, throughout this entire book is disgraceful. Mary Wilson had nothing to do with Ross's troubles - in fact, it was Ross herself that walked all over Mary Wilson to get to where she is today. Secondly, this book portrays Miss Ross to be a candidate for sainthood - totally innocent of all the drama that has surrounded her all these years. It is well known that Miss Ross has created more than her fair share of drama and her diva antics are well-known and documented facts. But the most outlandish portrayal in this book is that Ross's other singing partner, the late Florence Ballard, was completely responsible for her own decline and ouster from the Supremes. The author fails to mention that Ballard was forced out of the spotlight due to the ambitions of Ross and her lover - Motown President Berry Gordy Jr. To say that Ross didn't have a hand in Ballard's downfall is an outright lie. It is a well known fact that she conspired along with Berry Gordy to force Ballard out of the group in 1967.

To be fair, although Ross wasn't the best singer at Motown, her hard work, talent and ambition opened doors for other black artists. Her performance as Billie Holiday in "Lady Sings the Blues" was one of the greatest accomplishments of her career. But what the author also fails to mention is that her relationship with Berry Gordy and her treatment of her fellow singing partners and colleagues at Motown tainted her and it still hasn't been forgotten.

And, last but not least, the 2000 Return to Love tour failed because Miss Ross didn't really want to tour with Mary Wilson - plain and simple. She failed to realize that all her fans - and fans of the Supremes ever wanted was a real reunion between her, Mary and Cindy Birdsong. If Ross had just sat down with her former singing partners and discussed the tour like adults I'm sure that they would have come to an agreement and given the fans what they wanted and deserved - a real reunion of Diana Ross and the Supremes. Instead, Ross's egomania overtook any real sense of what the fans wanted. Ross tried to tour with two former 70's Supremes she had never sung with before and the tour was cancelled after only a few performances due to poor ticket sales. What the author can't admit is that Ross's need to be in total control, her diva antics, and poor business decisions ultimately ruined her career.

Summary of A Lifetime To Get Here: Diana Ross: The American Dreamgirl

This unauthorized biography of entertainment legend Diana Ross strives to give a balanced account of her life and career while giving her the historical due that seems to have escaped her previously. Captured in vivid detail are her groundbreaking performances leading the Supremes, the renowned concert in Central Park amidst a raging thunderstorm, and the peaks and valleys of the more than 40 years of her ongoing stage, studio, and screen career. The book steers clear of dry biography, in that it is interspersed with entertaining essays that capture the effect her life and career have had on fans throughout the years. This book is a must-read for anyone with an appreciation for popular culture over the last half century.
