Book Reviews of A Is for Apron: 25 Fresh & Flirty DesignsBook Review: Vintage Aprons Summary: 5 StarsI haven't seen this book yet, but I'm buying it! I recently saw some aprons made from old tableclothes that were sooooo cute. I have a bunch of my mothers colorful tableclothes from the 1940's. I'm going to use the patterns in this book to make aprons for my neices. Enjoy!
Book Review: A for Aprons, I for Improve Instructions/Patterns Summary: 2 StarsA is for Apron is a great book to get one interested in sewing aprons, seeing cute ideas and reading a small history of the apron (or at least viewing the changes in style over time), however.... these are the many problems I encountered when sewing aprons from the book:
1. The recommended fabric allowances include a lot of waste (good if you like scraps).
2. Not all of the pattern pieces match/align together (example: Kaleidoscope).
3. The pictures of the model aprons do not always match the finished product using the patterns (example: Psychedelic Squares- length of ties- too short).
4. Lack of a lining or back to the apron is not "crisp," or in my opinion not worthy of gifting to another person. If you want to do this, there is actually enough fabric (as listed) to just double the fronts of the apron to use as a back (example: Psychadelic Squares and The Waldorf.
5. There are easier ways to make a lot of the aprons, in addition many of the instructions are difficult to understand (I have been sewing for 35 years).
Bottom line the aprons are adorable, but do not invest in expensive material until you have made the apron using the pattern at least once (that way you can make adjustments to each). I have re-written instructions for every apron on this book for the next time.
Book Review: What a fun fun book!!! Summary: 5 StarsI just bought this book today from JoAnne's on a 1/2 price sale ,and sat down to read it and look at all the fantastic ideas !
The thing about this apron book is that you get ALL the patterns in it ~ granted you have to have them enlarged 400%~ but for the price of this book, I am LOADED with ideas for gift giving for women~ as well as men ~in my family.
With the economy being so tight this year, this is a great way to start off Christmas gift giving early.
I would have loved to own this book earlier as I attended a housewarming party this weekend and could have whipped up a unisex apron , added a few wonderful spices in a basket and it would have been far more unique of a gift than what I purchased the couple.
We are a big Italian family that LOVES to cook~
I cant believe the incredible ideas offered in this book !
What a creative outlet,,, and think,,,,not too worry about sizing either!
I had to grab a few yards of different fabrics before I left JoAnne's just so I could get started!
I for one am going to look at older thrift shop skirts in a whole different way,,,for there is one apron ( not a pattern either!) that you cut up the front of the skirt and then add a coordinating band around the top~
How much can that cost?
Two dollars for a skirt and MAYBE 1.50 for the band if the fabric is on sale,,,and well,,,,you have yourself a quick yet inexpensive gift.
I would tuck a copy of this book in a large pocket.
For the record , I DO use aprons simply because I am a baker and cook and have ruined too many good sweaters when I entertained by not wearing them.
One thing I would have liked to see more of is some children,s aprons because I always have little helpers in our kitchen and THEY don,t feel like it's really " baking time" unless they , too, have their aprons on!
I think the resurrection of the humble apron is because home entertaining and food prep is becoming and art form again ( just look at all the Food Network shows today and how many people are watching them from all age groups!)
I plan on sewing ( or knitting) most of my presents this year and this is just the book I need to do it,,I don't have to really worry about the perfect fit for anyone in particular. I cant wait to sew myself some fabulous holiday aprons and for ONCE , I can don an apron when I have a party at my home and have something that is nicely shaped to me , some of the patterns are extremely flattering, so much so, one could really coordinate your outfit with your apron ( I kid you not!)
I double dare you not to love this book!
Book Review: A Warm and Wonderful Read Summary: 5 StarsI could not put this book down, once I opened the cover. Each page brought back memories of my grandmother, my mother, my aunts and of me, years ago when aprons were a MUST have in the kitchen! Now my grown daughters and their Suburban friends all want me to make them aprons, as I made my daughters pretty ones for presents! It's flirty, it's Retro, it's Back! Sit down with the book and fall in love again with being a woman. I have given this book as a "50th" birthday present to many.
Book Review: Great book Summary: 5 StarsThis book is so cute! I love looking at the different patterns. I did have trouble getting the patterns blown up to 400 percent. I went to two different places with copier machines and neither knew how to make it copy with multiple pages. I ended up scanning them in with my scanner and printing them out in multiple pages. I love all the different patterns in this book!
