For those whose passion is ancient history, especially that of archaic Italy or Greece, this book is a gem of knowledge. Professor Pallottino dismisses the view that Rome was the only power of note on the Italian peninsula after the start of the Iron Age after 900B.C.E.. The Romans were one of many other peoples and tribes amongst the Latins in Latium Vetus; we see many other peoples of indigenous and Indo-European extraction who settled and spread throughout Italy. What of the Etruscans (Rasena),the East Italic peoples such as the Sabines, Samnites, Lucanians, Bruttians, and Apulian peoples, not to mention the Kelts (Gauls) and even the Western Greeks, who were contenders for the prize of Italy. Let us not forget that the Samnites, who by a hair's breath,almost snatched the peninsula from Rome's grasp during the Samnite Wars between the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C.E.Professor Pallattino gives us the real story of the formation of Italian as well as Roman culture and civilization on the Italian peninsula during the archaic and classical periods and the peoples themselves who had a tremendous influence on the development of world history in the West since that time.
