Book Reviews of A Father's AffairBook Review: Canongate books ought to fire whoever titled this book Summary: 4 StarsFirst of all, I love the story. That's not what I'm writing about.
It's the title I hate.
The title of this book in Dutch is "De Passievrucht". Passion fruit. Fruit of passion. Refers to the son. It's a mystery story.
Calling it "A Father's Affair" takes away the mystery.
You know, people who write for newspapers are familiar with this kind of gaff. The person who writes the story often doesn't chose the headline for their story. That's a business decision. I'm not going to blame the translator for this stupidity. It's more than likely some business exec in the marketing division of Canongate books.
Fire him, Canongate. He's a liability to your company.
Summary of A Father's AffairWhat happens to the father of a thirteen-year-old boy when he discovers that he has been infertile all his life? That intriguing question is the starting point of A Father's Affair. Still reeling from the sudden death of his wife, the one person who could answer his questions, the protagonist, Armin Minderhout, begins a quest to discover the biological father of his son. The reader joins him on an extraordinary journey, one in which he is forced to reconsider everything and everyone he has ever believed in. With the page-turning suspense of a whodunit, A Father's Affair probes the eternal question of how well we know the ones we love. Touching, at times extremely funny, and erotically playful, it is a story of universal appeal -- a stylish, acutely insightful, and utterly captivating read.
